People think the 'typical' member of a group looks like them

ScienceDaily (Sep. 2, 2011) ? What does a typical European face look like according to Europeans? It all depends on which European you ask. Germans think the typical European looks more German; Portuguese people think the typical European looks more Portuguese. That's the conclusion of a new study which will be published in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. The results shed light on how people think about groups they belong to.

Other studies have found that, when people choose typical characteristics for a group they're in, they'll pick characteristics more like themselves. But that research was done using words. Roland Imhoff and Rainer Banse of the University of Bonn, Ron Dotsch and Dani?l H.J. Wigboldus of Radboud University Nijmegen, and Mauro Bianchi of the University Institute of Lisbon chose to take a different approach: pictures.

The researchers recruited two sets of participants, in Germany and Portugal. Each person sat in front of a computer for about 20 minutes looking at pairs of pictures -- 770 pairs in all. Every picture was based on the same composite photograph of a man, but each had been computer-manipulated in a different way to introduce noise, distorting the picture and the man's features. Each time, the participant was supposed to pick the picture they thought looked more European. The researchers averaged the pictures that were chosen in each group to come up with one average picture for the Portuguese group and one for the German group.

The average picture created from the Portuguese participants' opinions looks darker, with wider-set eyes. The face created by the Germans has lighter hair and looks more German. The researchers had other people rate the two pictures and found that these observations held up -- Germans had come up with a "typical European" face that looked more German, while Portuguese people thought of the "typical European" as more Portuguese-looking.

It may also be that this is just a sort of a mental shortcut people use to think of an abstract concept, like "European" or "America," Imhoff says. It may also be that people are expressing a kind of subtle belief that they think their group is better than others. "It has been claimed that I can elevate my own group by claiming it's particularly typical," Imhoff says. This could have implications for racial profiling. For example, if a white police officer thinks of "British" as someone who is white like him, he may be more suspicious of someone who doesn't look like that. Much more research is needed to find out if that's true, Imhoff says.

Health and Fitness ? Chinese Herbal Medicine Prevents And ...

Western Bisphosphonate Drug Treatments for Osteoporosis Linked To Weakened Bones

Osteoporosis (meaning ?porous bones?) is a condition where bone tissue loses its density, over a period of time, resulting in weakness and an increased risk of fracture. These risks can be reduced with lifestyle changes, nutritional supplementation and exercise programs designed to strengthen bone, improve equilibrium and prevent falls. But if your osteoporosis is advanced and you are currently under the care of a western physician, more than likely you have been given a prescription for a bisphosphonate drug such as Fosamax? or Boniva? to artificially increase the density of your bones. These drugs have been the treatment of choice since the mid 1990?s. However, as with all apparently good things, it pays to follow the latest research studies that actually test the effectiveness and safety of the drugs you use over the long term.

Recent studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine have exposed a significant link between the long-term use of Fosamax? and unusual transverse fractures of the thigh bone, indicating that prolonged therapy with these drugs tends to weaken bone integrity rather than strengthening it. (1)

In April of this year, Dr. Pauline Camacho, from Loyola University Medical Center told Reuters Health that the current AACE (American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists) guidelines recommend patients take a 3-year hiatus from bisphosphonate therapy after 4 or 5 years of treatment. (2)

Here in the West, there is no pharmaceutical alternative to bisphosphonate therapy other than the usual recommendations for mineral supplements such as Calcium citrate, Vit. D-3, Magnesium, Potassium, Boron, Vit K-2 and Strontium ranelate. Traditional Chinese medicine, however, has been helping people successfully deal with all aspects of aging for a few thousand years!

The Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) Approach:

Traditional Chinese medical theory approaches a disease state such as osteoporosis from a multi-faceted point of view, taking into consideration the relative balance between all aspects of your body and its environment. If we use the metaphor of a tree to describe a particular medical condition, the Chinese physician will commence his investigation by inspecting the leaves, stems and branches as well as the tree?s trunk and root system. He will also assess the local earthly environment and the sources of air and water before arriving at a diagnosis of what has become out of balance. Even if a set of symptoms describes a disharmony in the trunk and branches, such as ?osteoporosis?, the physician will devise a treatment plan that replenishes resources for the tree?s use and rebalances all the systems that are responsible for sustaining the tree?s vitality.

According to the Chinese ancients, the health and vitality of bone matrix is dependent on the amount and quality of Kidney Jing (literally ?essence resource?). Jing is a useful metaphor to describe the ?water? source for bone growth and remodeling activities during the tree?s life span. In simple human terms, along with many other activities, Jing tells the osteoblasts to get to work making new bone and supplies the osteoclasts with energy to break down old bone.

During her lifetime, a woman can deplete her Kidney Jing, especially during pregnancy and delivery, overworking, stress or excess sexual activity. As a result, she will lose bone density. Fragile bones, however, are not the only symptom she will suffer. Other signs of Jing loss include premature graying of hair, balding, loose teeth, poor hearing, low back and knee pain. These symptoms can also be found in men, although less frequently and usually later in life.

In TCM theory, the liver system stores blood and controls the vigor of sinews and tendons. If the patient?s liver resources are depleted, he or she may also experience dizziness, dryness, blurred vision, tinnitus, thirst, night sweating and arthritic tendons and joints.

These same patients may also complain of muscle aches and weakness, poor digestion and fatigue. In TCM theory, spleen/pancreatic Qi (literally ?energy?) is responsible for transforming and transporting food resources to all parts of the body, including the bones. Spleen energy also recycles blood and maintains the health of vessels and muscles.

Chinese Herbs Treat Osteoporosis

Given this larger picture of possible signs and symptoms, Chinese medicine aims to re-supply each of the organ systems that are responsible for healthy bone ? the liver, spleen, pancreas and especially kidney Jing. Chinese herbal formulas have been used with great success for over two thousand years to achieve this end. Herbal specialists know precisely which roots, plants, fruits and natural substances replenish these resources. When these substances are simmered in water, they release their therapeutic nutrients into the water, turning the resulting broth into a medicine of great value.

Soup Broth: An Essential Form of Food Therapy For Osteoporosis

Most Chinese hospitals deliver herbal prescriptions to their patients in thermos bottles of warmed broth. Patients using soup broth therapy recover their health more quickly and are able to maintain a higher level of vitality for a longer period of time. Tablets and capsules, although useful, are more slowly absorbed into the body and take longer to achieve their intended effect.

?Chinese Soup Broth to Make Healthy Bone and Prevent Osteoporosis??

This broth recipe has been handed down from one Chinese doctor to another for centuries. In many of my osteoporosis patients, it has entirely replaced the need for bisphosphonate medications. You prepare it yourself by simmering pork neck bones and carefully selected herbs in a crock pot for 6 -12 hours Each batch lasts 16 days and can be stored in your refrigerator or freezer until you need it. The herbal ingredients for the broth can be obtained through my clinic in convenient kitchen-ready packets accompanied by very simple cooking directions and can be mailed anywhere in the country.

Although the exact formula is proprietary, ingredients in the basic broth include Chinese wolfberry, longan fruit, red jujube date, codonopsis root, astragalus root, angelica sinensis root, American ginseng root, glehnia root, fresh ginger root and deer antler gelatin. Adjustments can be made to the recipe for patients who also suffer from arthritis or hip/joint disease.

In my 11+ years of clinical experience, every patient who has continued with the therapy for more than nine months has increased his/her bone density by 15 ? 30%. All patients also committed themselves to 30 minutes a day of exercise, a garden-fresh food diet and some basic vitamin/mineral supplementation. The use of this broth recipe has thus far produced no side effects, and appears to maintain bone health for as long as you incorporate it in your lifestyle.

Facebook to allow further music integration

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Facebook is preparing to bolster the programming tools it offers to licensed music services like Rhapsody, Spotify, MOG and Rdio to make it easier for users of the social network to find out what songs their friends are digging.

The tools won't amount to a unique music service on its own, since Facebook has not negotiated licensing deals with major music companies, according to a person familiar with the matter.

But it will make give Facebook users yet another reason to stick around. Being more aware of what your friends are listening to could make the subscription music plans more attractive. They all offer unlimited listening to millions of new and old tracks on mobile devices for $10 a month, but they have yet to gain enough traction to replace revenue the music industry has lost from declining CD sales.

The person was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and declined to be identified.

Facebook is expected to reveal the specific set of tools at its developer conference in San Francisco, called f8, on Sept. 22.

Spokesman Larry Wu said Facebook had nothing new to announce. "Many of the most popular music services around the world are integrated with Facebook and we're constantly talking to our partners about ways to improve these integrations," he said in a statement.

This week, subscription leader Rhapsody launched a beta version of its integration using Facebook's sign-in tool, Facebook Connect. A Rhapsody customer can now "like" an artist or song, and doing so lets others know in the person's Facebook news feed. Liked artists are synced across both services and Rhapsody subscribers can listen to artists that their friends have liked on Facebook.

But there is no way currently to find out exactly what a friend is listening to at a particular moment, nor can a Facebook friend join in and simultaneously listen to what a Rhapsody user is playing in real time.

Rhapsody spokeswoman Jaimee Steele said the company is "definitely interested" in improving its Facebook tools.

"We think that music is a very social experience and we are always looking at ways to enhance that experience," she said.

Swedish new entrant Spotify allows Facebook friends to access the playlists their friends have chosen to share. Rdio allows people to connect through Facebook, follow other Rdio users and find out what albums they have been listening to the most.

Rdio CEO Drew Larner and MOG spokeswoman Marni Greenberg declined to comment.

Facebook's new tools are an incremental step in getting people to pay for music even if Facebook itself does not stand to gain directly.

So far, subscription plans that offer unlimited song listening have not been popular enough to reverse a decade-long slide in CD sales. Piracy is partly to blame for the decline, as is the popularity of buying singles, such as through Apple's iTunes music store, instead of albums.

Last year, revenue from paid subscription plans fell 5 percent from a year earlier to $201 million, even though the number of subscribers grew about 25 percent to 1.5 million, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. Including CD sales, downloads and other forms of music, the value of U.S. music shipments fell 11 percent to $6.85 billion.

The most popular of the subscription services, Rhapsody, has more than 800,000 paying subscribers.

Novel alloy could produce hydrogen fuel from sunlight

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2011) ? Scientists from the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville have determined that an inexpensive semiconductor material can be "tweaked" to generate hydrogen from water using sunlight.

The research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, was led by Professors Madhu Menon and R. Michael Sheetz at the University of Kentucky Center for Computational Sciences, and Professor Mahendra Sunkara and graduate student Chandrashekhar Pendyala at the University of Louisville Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research. Their findings were published Aug. 1 in the Physical Review B.

The researchers say their findings are a triumph for computational sciences, one that could potentially have profound implications for the future of solar energy.

Using state-of-the-art theoretical computations, the University of Kentucky-University of Louisville team demonstrated that an alloy formed by a 2 percent substitution of antimony (Sb) in gallium nitride (GaN) has the right electrical properties to enable solar light energy to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, a process known as photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. When the alloy is immersed in water and exposed to sunlight, the chemical bond between the hydrogen and oxygen molecules in water is broken. The hydrogen can then be collected.

"Previous research on PEC has focused on complex materials," Menon said. "We decided to go against the conventional wisdom and start with some easy-to-produce materials, even if they lacked the right arrangement of electrons to meet PEC criteria. Our goal was to see if a minimal 'tweaking' of the electronic arrangement in these materials would accomplish the desired results."

Gallium nitride is a semiconductor that has been in widespread use to make bright-light LEDs since the 1990s. Antimony is a metalloid element that has been in increased demand in recent years for applications in microelectronics. The GaN-Sb alloy is the first simple, easy-to-produce material to be considered a candidate for PEC water splitting. The alloy functions as a catalyst in the PEC reaction, meaning that it is not consumed and may be reused indefinitely. University of Louisville and University of Kentucky researchers are currently working toward producing the alloy and testing its ability to convert solar energy to hydrogen.

Hydrogen has long been touted as a likely key component in the transition to cleaner energy sources. It can be used in fuel cells to generate electricity, burned to produce heat, and utilized in internal-combustion engines to power vehicles. When combusted, hydrogen combines with oxygen to form water vapor as its only waste product. Hydrogen also has wide-ranging applications in science and industry.

Because pure hydrogen gas is not found in free abundance on Earth, it must be manufactured by unlocking it from other compounds. Thus, hydrogen is not considered an energy source, but rather an "energy carrier." Currently, it takes a large amount of electricity to generate hydrogen by water splitting. As a consequence, most of the hydrogen manufactured today is derived from non-renewable sources such as coal and natural gas.

Sunkara says the GaN-Sb alloy has the potential to convert solar energy into an economical, carbon-free source for hydrogen.

"Hydrogen production now involves a large amount of CO2 emissions," Sunkara said. "Once this alloy material is widely available, it could conceivably be used to make zero-emissions fuel for powering homes and cars and to heat homes."

Menon says the research should attract the interest of other scientists across a variety of disciplines.

"Photocatalysis is currently one of the hottest topics in science," Menon said. "We expect the present work to have a wide appeal in the community spanning chemistry, physics and engineering."
