Mysteries of ozone depletion continue 25 years after the discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2011) ? Even after many decades of studying ozone and its loss from our atmosphere miles above Earth, plenty of mysteries and surprises remain, including an unexpected loss of ozone over the Arctic this past winter, an authority on the topic said in Denver Colorado on May 29. She also discussed chemistry and climate change, including some proposed ideas to "geoengineer" Earth's climate to slow down or reverse global warming.

The talk happened at the 242nd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), being held this week.

In a Kavli Foundation Innovations in Chemistry Lecture, Susan Solomon, Ph.D., of the University of Colorado, Boulder, said that the combined efforts of scientists, the public, industry and policy makers to stop ozone depletion is one of science's greatest success stories, but unanswered questions remain. And ozone is still disappearing.

"We're no longer producing the primary chemicals -- chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) -- that caused the problem, but CFCs have very long lifetimes in our atmosphere, and so we'll have ozone depletion for several more decades," said Solomon. "There are still some remarkable mysteries regarding exactly how these chlorine compounds behave in Antarctica -- and it's amazing that we still have much to learn, even after studying ozone for so long."

The ozone layer is crucial to life on Earth, forming a protective shield high in the atmosphere that blocks potentially harmful ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Scientists have known since 1930 that ozone forms and decomposes through chemical processes. The first hints that human activity threatened the ozone layer emerged in the 1970s, and included one warning from Paul Crutzen, Ph.D., that agricultural fertilizers might reduce ozone levels. Another hint was from F. Sherwood Rowland, Ph.D., and Mario Molina, Ph.D., who described how CFCs in aerosol spray cans and other products could destroy the ozone layer. The three shared a 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for that research. In 1985, British scientists discovered a "hole," a completely unexpected area of intense ozone depletion over Antarctica. Solomon's 1986 expedition to Antarctica provided some of the clinching evidence that underpinned a global ban on CFCs and certain other ozone-depleting gases.

Evidence suggests that the ozone depletion has stopped getting worse. "Ozone can be thought of as a patient in remission, but it's too early to declare recovery," said Solomon. And surprises, such as last winter's loss of 40% of the ozone over the Arctic still occur due to the extremely long lifetimes of ozone-destroying substances released years ago before the ban.

Solomon also took listeners on a tour of gases and aerosols that affect climate change and described how these substances can contribute to global warming.

"On the thousand-year timescale, carbon dioxide is by far the most important greenhouse gas produced by humans, but there are some other interesting -- though much less abundant -- gases such as perfluorinated compounds that also last thousands of years and similarly affect our climate for millennia," said Solomon.

Increases in atmospheric "greenhouse gases" such as carbon dioxide trap heat in the atmosphere, causing Earth's temperature to creep upward. Global warming is causing ocean levels to rise and could lead some regions to become dry "dust bowls."

Dealing with global warming has prompted a lot of interesting research on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, how to adapt to a changing climate and on the possibility of 'geoengineering' to cool the climate.

"Recent studies on 'geoengineering' the Earth's climate involve stratospheric particles of different sorts," she said. "Most of these schemes involve sulfate particles, but other types have been proposed."

The talk took place on Monday, August 29 in the Wells Fargo Theater at the Colorado Convention Center.

Sponsored by The Kavli Foundation, a philanthropic organization that supports basic scientific research, the lectures are designed to address the urgent need for vigorous, "outside the box" thinking by scientists as they tackle the world's mounting challenges, including climate change, emerging diseases, and water and energy shortages.

"We are dedicated to advancing science for the benefit of humanity, promoting public understanding of scientific research, and supporting scientists and their work," said Kavli Foundation President Robert W. Conn in a statement. "The Kavli Foundation Innovations in Chemistry Lecture program at the ACS national meetings fits perfectly with our commitment to support groundbreaking discovery and promote public understanding."

The Kavli lectures debuted at the Anaheim meeting in March during this International Year of Chemistry and will continue through 2013. They will address the urgent need for vigorous, new, "outside-the-box"- thinking, as scientists tackle many of the world's mounting challenges like climate change, emerging diseases, and water and energy shortages. The Kavli Foundation, an internationally recognized philanthropic organization known for its support of basic scientific innovation, agreed to sponsor the lectures in conjunction with ACS in 2010.

Officials: 5 dead in suicide attack in Iraq mosque (AP)

BAGHDAD ? A suicide bomber blew himself up inside Baghdad's largest Sunni mosque Sunday night, killing five people during prayers, officials said.

They said parliament lawmaker Khalid al-Fahdawi was among the dead in the 9:40 p.m Sunday strike. Seventeen worshippers were wounded.

Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, a spokesman for Baghdad's military operations command, confirmed the attack happened inside the Um al-Qura mosque during prayers in the western Baghdad neighborhood of Al-Jamiaah.

The blue-domed building is the largest Sunni mosque in Baghdad.

The attack hit Sunnis who were praying in a special service during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, which ends Tuesday. It demonstrates anew that security measures to protect Iraqis as U.S. forces prepare to leave remain riddled with gaps, and shows the extent to which militants want to extend violence even as the eight-year- U.S. presence winds down.

That the bomber detonated his explosives vest inside the mosque is particularly alarming, because it is reminiscent of a 2006 attack on a Shiite shrine in the Sunni city of Samarra that fueled widespread sectarian violence and brought Iraq to the brink of civil war.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's bombing. Suicide bombings generally are a hallmark of al-Qaida, which is dominated by Sunnis.

The mosque's security is provided by the government-supported Sunni Endowment, and al-Moussawi raised the possibility that the bomber had inside help.

"For sure there must have been someone inside the mosque who helped the bomber," al-Moussawi said. "It must have been someone who is protecting the mosque."

OECD sees cutting Europe, Japan growth forecasts (Reuters)

JACKSON HOLE, Wyoming (Reuters) ? The OECD is prepared to cut growth expectations for much of the world, including Europe and Japan, the organization's head said on Friday.

"We're not talking about a contraction of the economies, but a slowdown of the growth," Angel Gurria, secretary-general, of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development club of industrialized nations, said in an interview with Reuters Insider in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where central bankers are gathered for an annual meeting.

Only a few countries, like Turkey, are still experiencing strong growth. The rest are linked together in what has become a general slowdown: "In open economies, if they are not growing of course they don't buy from the others," Gurria said.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Friday said the U.S. central bank had marked down its outlook for U.S. economic growth and made clear the policy focus was still on spurring a stronger recovery, but he did not provide any fresh details on steps the Fed could take.

Calling the tone of Bernanke's speech "very sober," Gurria said that nevertheless, "It's always good to listen to the head of the Fed saying, 'We're here, we're vigilant, we will do whatever it takes,'"

For the full interview, please see: http://reut.rs/oEBEio

Despite the near-term gloom, Gurria said there is still room for optimism on the long-term outlook.

"Not only did he say there's a way out, there is of course, but he mentioned many of the reasons," he said of Bernanke's comments. "What we are seeing at the OECD is: Go structural, go social. That is if you ran out of monetary policy room, you ran out of fiscal room because your pockets are empty, so you go structural."

U.S. believes Google's Page knew about pharmacy ads: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Justice Department investigators believed that Google Inc's Chief Executive Larry Page knew about improper online pharmacy ads that Google carried, and allowed the ads for years, the Wall Street Journal said.

On Wednesday, Google agreed to pay $500 million to settle a criminal probe into ads it accepted for online Canadian pharmacies selling drugs in the United States.

"Larry Page knew what was going on," Peter Neronha, the Rhode Island U.S. Attorney who led the probe, told the Journal.

Neronha was not immediately available for comment.

Prosecutors found internal emails and documents that, they say, show Page was aware of the allegedly illicit ad sales, the newspaper said.

The Justice Department said earlier this week that the advertisements led to illegal imports of prescription drugs into the country.

The Justice Department contends that Google knew it was potentially violating U.S. law since at least 2003, but didn't take effective action to ban the ads until it mounted an undercover sting operation against the Internet search giant in 2009, the journal said.

"As we've said, we take responsibility for our actions. With hindsight, we shouldn't have allowed these ads on Google in the first place," a spokesperson for Google said in an email.

Dina Lohan Pens Movie, Seeks A-List Cast

We knew Dina Lohan was delusional, but this takes the cake.

The mother of Lindsay Lohan is telling investors she can snag some of the biggest actors in Hollywood for her new movie. Yes, Di-Lo penned a movie.

Dina is trying to raise $5.28 million to shoot Growing Defiant, which "takes a hard look at social pressures that can lead a kid in the wrong direction."

Wonder where she got that plot line.

Dina Lohan on Today

According to her business plan, the actors she'll go after include Dakota Fanning, Selena Gomez, Michael Cera, James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Tina Fey, Amanda Seyfried, Hayden Panettiere, Emma Stone, and Mila Kunis.

And son Michael Lohan, Jr., in the starring role of a heroin addict.

Hilariously, an asterisked note at the bottom of the plan says this is a "suggested cast list only. Michael Lohan is the only cast member who has been signed."

Good luck landing those stars for $5.28 million total. Or at all.

Increase The Success Of Your Business With Opt-in Email Marketing

Online marketing entails numerous components of promoting your website. Any veteran marketer by now is acquainted with important aspects like SEO, long tail keywords, and link building. Targeted visitors to your web site is definitely the key component to internet success. More specifically, it?s targeted traffic that can make or break your business. Converting traffic is composed of individuals who buy a product or service through your site. Ideally, these individuals will return and purchase from you again in the near future. A legion of clients who return and purchase from you many times will allow you to earn a nice steady stream of recurring income.

Opt-in email marketing is the key to have clients return to you for future product sales. This particular system works through putting a sign up box on your site. Site visitors who enter in their name and email address will become subscribers to your list. The goal will be to generate a list of hundreds to many thousands of subscribers.

There are various internet companies that offer opt-in email marketing solutions. For a monthly fee, you?ll be able to have a sign up box installed on your web site. Your task from there will be to publish newsletters at frequent intervals, and then the company will automatically deliver them to your list subscribers.

The newsletters will need to be well written articles concerning whatever niche, product, or service you are marketing. You need to have a link back to your site with every single newsletter. That is what makes opt-in email marketing so valuable. Visitors to your site who sign up for your newsletters become possible returning clients. Without a sign up box, most web surfers who stumble on to your site will just be one time visitors.

The appropriate approach with the opt-in list will be to create trust with your subscribers. Your newsletters must include relevant information as well as resources they can use for additional free info. In the event you babble constantly about how great your product or services are, then subscribers will discover your true purpose. Don?t take on a used car salesman mentality. Get your subscribers to have confidence in you by giving good information. It is also important to respond to individual queries from your subscribers.

The majority of successful internet marketers use an opt-in system to attract possible customers. Like any other promotional technique, this one will take trial and error. Subscribers aren?t going to instantly turn into clients. In a few cases, subscribers will get rid of your newsletter without even looking at it. A few will also unsubscribe prior to ever purchasing anything from your business. Take it all as a learning experience. After awhile, you are going to identify patterns and trends and use them to your advantage to improve the conversion rate.

Are you looking for help in building an email mailing list? Be sure to visit our site to see how we can help your business with our email directory list services.

Europe, US seek UN sanctions against Syria

European nations and the United States are circulating a draft U.N. Security Council resolution seeking an arms embargo and other sanctions aimed at stopping the Syrian government's continued crackdown on dissident protesters.

  1. Only on msnbc.com

    1. For Class of '15, Amazon has never been just a river
    2. Small quake has big reach
    3. Post 9/11, surveillance cameras everywhere
    4. Flight attendants train for cabin pressures
    5. Dramatic shootout caught on camera
    6. Security flaw could expose credit card data
    7. Quake interrupts Manhattan for a New York minute

But the supporters faced immediate opposition from veto-wielding Russia, whose ambassador Vitaly Churkin disagreed that it's time to slap sanctions on Bashar Assad's regime.

British Deputy Ambassador Philip Parham told reporters after a closed session Tuesday afternoon that the draft resolution backed by his country, France, Germany, Portugal and the United States also includes a travel ban and an assets freeze on individuals and entities linked to the regime. He says it also calls for an end to violence against protesters.

Churkin said on Tuesday Moscow did not think it was time to impose sanctions on Syria over its five-month crackdown.

He was speaking shortly before the draft sanctions resolution was delivered on Syria to the 15-nation body.

Russia, along with Britain, China, France and the United States, has the power to veto any resolution, and Churkin's remarks suggested that persuading Moscow to back tough measures would not be easy for the drafters of the sanctions text.

The draft calls for sanctions against 23 Syrian individuals and four companies.

U.S. ambassador's visit to Syria
The U.S. ambassador made a surprise trip to a southern Syrian town Tuesday, his second visit to an area rocked by protests against President Bashar al-Assad and a move likely to antagonize the authorities in Damascus.

As a U.N. humanitarian team toured the country, security forces raided the countryside near the city of Hama, killing at least five people in assaults to subdue pro-democracy demonstrations, local activists said.

Houses were stormed in several villages and towns in the al-Ghab Plain, farmland east of the Mediterranean coast that contains the Roman city of Apamea, they said

"Shabbiha (pro-Assad militiamen) accompanied the military. We have one name of the five martyrs, Omar Mohammed Saeed al-Khateeb," said an activist in Hama, which has been under military siege since it was stormed at the beginning of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan on August 1.?

The United Nations says 2,200 people have been killed in Syria and its human rights council launched an investigation on Tuesday into the violence, including possible crimes against humanity, despite objections from Russia, China and Cuba.

Story: Syrian troops kill 7 after UN team visit

The bloodshed was wrought by Assad's crackdown on a five-month-old popular uprising which prompted the United States and European Union to widen sanctions against Syria last week and to call on the Syrian president to step aside.

In Jassem, a town about 30 km (20 miles) east of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, residents said U.S. Ambassador Robert Ford toured an area where activists say Syrian forces killed at least 12 people in May in response to major unrest.?

Ford also visited Hama
Ford angered Damascus seven weeks ago when he paid a visit to Hama in a gesture of solidarity with the city where huge anti-Assad protests occurred in June and July. At the start of August, Assad sent troops into Hama to crush the demonstrations.

Damascus accused Ford of inciting unrest -- a charge which Washington denied -- and banned Western diplomats from leaving Damascus and its outskirts. Days later, a crowd broke into the U.S. embassy compound, breaking windows and spraying graffiti.

"He came by car this morning, although Jassem is swarming with secret police," a resident told Reuters. "He got out and spent a good time walking round. He was careful not to be seen talking with people, apparently not to cause them harm."

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland confirmed that Ford traveled to Jassem and spent about four hours there.

Ford, the first U.S. ambassador to Damascus since Washington withdrew its envoy in the wake of the 2005 assassination of Lebanese statesman Rafik al-Hariri, has been outspoken in criticizing authorities for firing at civilian protesters.

International condemnation of Syria's harsh repression of street unrest escalated this month after Assad sent the army into several cities including Hama, Deir al-Zor and Latakia.

Arab states broke months of silence to call for an end to the violence and neighboring Turkey, which for years had close relations with Damascus, has also told Assad to rein in his security forces.

Story: Obama tells Syria's Assad to quit; condemns him for 'slaughtering his own people'

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Monday it was "troubling" that Assad had not kept a promise he made last week to call off military and police operations.

UN Inquiry
The U.N. Human Rights Council launched an international commission of inquiry into Assad's crackdown, condemning what it called "continued grave and systematic human rights violations by Syrian authorities such as arbitrary executions, excessive use of force and the killing and persecution of protesters and human rights defenders."

The 47-member forum easily adopted a resolution presented by the European Union, the United States and Arab countries including Saudi Arabia.

The council launched the inquiry to establish the facts "and where possible to identify those responsible with a view of ensuring that perpetrators of violations, including those that may constitute crimes against humanity, are held accountable."

'Urgent and proper action is paramount'
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement: "Urgent and proper action is paramount to investigate these violations, identify those responsible and ensure that perpetrators of violations are held accountable."

Separately Tuesday, the EU agreed to extend sanctions against Syria, adding 15 people and 5 institutions to the list of those already targeted by travel bans and asset freezes.

Syria's ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Faysal Khabbaz Hamoui, rejected the council resolution as unbalanced.

"This once again confirms that there is a determination to politically condemn Syria and pass over any proposal for opening and reform that exists in this country," he said in an appeal before the vote for members to reject the resolution.

The delegations of Russia, China and Cuba all took the floor to denounce what they called interference in Syria's internal affairs and said that they would vote against the text. Ecuador also voted against the resolution.

The vote came after Syrian forces shot dead three people in the city of Homs Monday, the same day that U.N. humanitarian team visited the city, according to activists.

Reuters and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

China says Libyan oil projects of mutual benefit (AP)

SHANGHAI ? China's oil investments in Libya are important to both sides and Beijing is hoping for a swift return to stability, the government said Tuesday.

As Libyan opposition fighters seeking to oust leader Moammar Gadhafi poured into Tripoli, Beijing said it was ready to cooperate in reconstruction and would respect the choice of the Libyan people ? apparently moving toward engagement with the rebels.

China abstained from the U.N. Security Council vote authorizing U.N. members to protect civilians rebelling against Gadhafi, and has pushed for a peaceful, political resolution of the conflict. Some 35,000 Chinese citizens were evacuated from the country after fighting erupted in February.

Wen Zhongliang, a deputy chief of the Commerce Ministry's foreign trade department, told reporters in Beijing on Tuesday that China's investments in Libya, estimated to be as high as $18 billion, had been affected by the country's current conflict but that it hopes to continue cooperation once stability is restored.

"China's investments in Libya, especially oil-related investments, are mutually beneficial economic cooperation that benefits the people of both countries," Wen said.

"We hope stability will be restored as soon as possible and to carry out cooperation with Libya in this regard," he said according to comments posted on the Commerce Ministry website.

According to the official Xinhua News Agency, China National Petroleum Corp., the country's state-run oil and gas giant, says it had to cancel six projects in Libya and Niger as a result of the unrest in the region.

It put losses from the disruptions at 1.2 billion yuan ($188 million).

Analysis: Slowdown could make Germany rethink euro crisis stance (Reuters)

FRANKFURT/BERLIN (Reuters) ? After being held up as a model of strength in a region saddled with debt and low growth, Germany suddenly finds itself in a perfect economic storm that could force it to rethink its approach to the crisis plaguing the wider euro zone.

New business sentiment figures from the Munich-based Ifo institute confirmed on Wednesday what tepid second-quarter growth data suggested last week: Europe's largest economy is slowing, and slowing sharply.

The reasons are many. Weaker demand from key trading partners in Europe, the United States and China has begun to weigh on German exports.

Meanwhile, growing doubts about whether euro zone politicians can lead the bloc out of its sovereign debt crisis are unsettling companies, consumers and financial markets, with consequences for the real economy.

It is too early to say how steep the slowdown in Germany will be, or whether the economy will be pushed into recession again, two years after it suffered its worst annual contraction since World War Two.

But the poor data is sure to get the attention of Germany's leaders, who have basked since early 2010 in the glow of an impressive economic recovery and have blamed the economic problems of their European partners on fiscal mismanagement and a lack of competitiveness.

"Germany appeared to be on a very good footing on both the fiscal and growth front, and this gave it leverage with its European partners," said Jacques Cailloux, chief European economist at RBS in London.

"The recent data show it is not immune, and that should be a wake-up call to policymakers in Germany."

SHOCK

How the slowdown will influence policy in Berlin probably depends on the extent of the downturn and how long it lasts.

Last week's preliminary data showed Germany's gross domestic product expanded just 0.1 percent in the second quarter of this year. Detailed GDP figures next week will reveal how big a drag private consumption was on growth, and whether temporary seasonal factors, which probably depressed construction activity, played an important role.

The Ifo report, a monthly survey of 7,000 German firms which is the most closely watched leading indicator for the economy, offered reasons for pessimism on Wednesday.

The main index fell to 108.7 in August from 112.9 in July, the steepest one-month drop since November 2008, shortly after the collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers triggered the global financial crisis.

"The numbers have come down hard," said Mark Wall, co-chief European economist at Deutsche Bank. "We haven't had a Lehman Brothers or a September 11th event but this has the air of a shock to it. It is disconcerting to see how fast things are deteriorating."

Like many other economists, Wall now forecasts economic stagnation for Germany through the end of the year, followed by meager growth in 2012.

In the short term, if slower growth pushes up unemployment and reduces tax revenues -- crimping Germany's ability to meet its own ambitious targets for cutting its budget deficit -- domestic political opposition could grow against extending more aid to weak euro zone countries such as Greece and Portugal.

Germany faces a crucial vote in its parliament next month on bolstering the powers of the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), the euro zone's bailout fund.

Grumbling within Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party has grown in recent weeks, with one senior ally of hers vowing this week to vote against the measure, which still seems sure to pass because of support from leading opposition parties.

"If Germans feel poorer and more troubled in their own economy it will make them less generous in providing aid, in making full use of the EFSF, in considering things like euro bonds. They will have more worries, be more insecure," said Charles Grant, director of the Center for European Reform in London.

That could fuel opposition to aid for weak euro zone states in smaller donor countries which to some extent take their lead from Germany, such as the Netherlands, Austria and Finland.

Last month, euro zone leaders agreed in principle on a second bailout of Greece that would include a further 109 billion euros ($157 billion) from the EFSF and the International Monetary Fund through mid-2014.

Any recession in Germany could, initially at least, sap Berlin's political will to continue administering the bailout over several years, and to provide additional financial guarantees if necessary so that the EFSF can protect other countries under attack by the bond market.

POST-LEHMAN U-TURN

If the economic slowdown is deep, however, German politicians could come to believe over the longer term that they are putting their own economy at risk by refusing to take bold steps to solve the euro zone's debt crisis.

One such step might be creating a common euro zone bond that governments would issue jointly. So far, Merkel has strongly resisted this idea, arguing that Germany would end up paying more to finance itself and that the bond would encourage irresponsible spending by other governments.

A growing number of economists and European business leaders, however, think a common bond may be the only way out of the region's crisis; Sergio Marchionne, chief executive of Italian car maker Fiat, endorsed this view on Wednesday.

If it becomes clear to Berlin's political class that such radical measures are needed to restore economic growth to the euro zone and by extension Germany, policy will shift.

The German government's initial response to the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy and subsequent turmoil in 2008 was to dismiss the crisis as American and play down its impact on the domestic economy.

But once it became clear that the crisis posed a major threat to Germany, Merkel took a series of aggressive measures which were deeply unpopular -- such as repeated bailouts of stricken banks -- to protect the economy.

"If the government sees that its own European policy is hurting the economy at home, it could lead to a change in their approach. They could in fact become more generous," said Wall of Deutsche Bank. "But it's very hard to predict."

'The Help' outflexes 'Conan' to win box office (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The maids of "The Help" proved far mightier than muscle-flexing "Conan the Barbarian" and three other new releases at the weekend box office, taking the top spot with an estimated $20.5 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales.

"The Help" rose from its second-place finish last week to the top spot with rave reviews and strong word-of-mouth buzz, distributor Walt Disney Co said on Sunday. The drama chronicles the relationships between white women in Mississippi and their black housekeepers in the 1960s.

The movie's North American (U.S. and Canadian) receipts slipped 21 percent from its debut a week earlier, an impressive hold and more than enough to beat underwhelming performances from four new films. To date, "The Help" has beat expectations by ringing up a total of $71.8 million.

"We always hoped 'The Help' would be a breath of fresh air after a busy, sequel-filled, smash-'em-up summer. The way the public's embracing it indicates that is indeed the case," said Dave Hollis, executive vice president for motion picture sales and distribution at Disney.

Last weekend's box-office leader, sci-fi movie "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," fell to second place with a projected $16.3 million domestically during its third weekend of release. Total North American sales now stand at $133.8 million for the latest take on the classic tale about genetically enhanced chimps that launch a revolution.

Of the new releases, "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World," performed the best at No. 3 with $12 million, hitting the low end of forecasts. "Given the marketplace this weekend, I'm okay with that number," said Erik Lomis, president of distribution for The Weinstein Co, which released the film.

The fourth "Spy Kids" movie was presented in "4D," with scratch-and-sniff cards to add scents throughout, and was aimed at children ages 12 and younger. "It plays and it delivers to that audience," Lomis said.

Two remakes of 1980s films -- "Conan the Barbarian" and "Fright Night" -- fell flat.

"Conan the Barbarian," a reboot of the film that launched Arnold Schwarzenegger's career, was the No. 4 movie for the weekend with $10 million, short of forecasts in the low- to-mid teens. Jason Momoa, seen recently in HBO series "Game of Thrones," plays the lead role in the updated version.

"Overall, the weekend box office was disappointing" for new films, said David Spitz, head of domestic distribution for Lionsgate, which released "Conan the Barbarian."

"Fright Night," a remake of a popular 1985 horror film, finished fifth with $8.3 million, also below pre-release estimates. It stars Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin and was targeted partly at young adults, an audience with "a finicky nature," said Disney's Hollis. Disney released "Fright Night" and "The Help," two films produced by DreamWorks.

"One Day," a new romance starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, landed in the No.9 spot with $5.1 million at domestic theaters. Focus Features, a unit of Comcast Corp, released "One Day."

Some Foundations To Building a Successful Internet Marketing Business

Some Foundations To Building a Successful Internet Marketing Business

Article by Lucky Chi

The internet marketing phenomenon is getting bigger all the time as ever more people try their hand at it. The total number of products and services sold over the internet is so large that it amounts to billions of dollars in profits. There is no reason why you can?t get grab a piece of this internet marketing action, so why not start today? Let?s now examine some proven strategies that will help you get off the ground as an internet marketer.

You will require relevant traffic, which is the foundation to building a successful internet marketing business. One Internet marketing myth that stands fresh even today is traffic equals sales. The problem is that many people are falling for the idea that they will make more sales if they can just increase their traffic. Sure, if you look at it as a numbers game it?s right to an extent. On the other hand, if you simply generate more traffic, that won?t translate into higher profits for your bank account. The degree of sales you make is influenced by a wide range of variables. First of all your traffic needs to be targeted enough and should be from relevant places related to the theme of your site. Additionally, no matter how much traffic your site gets, your sales copy needs to be effective in converting them to customers or it?s pointless. If you want to increase your conversions and your earnings, the best way to do it is by testing your sales page all the time. You need to ensure that your product and website are properly adequately optimized, or the extra traffic you drive won?t make a bit of difference. You need to make sure that you have everything on your site in perfect alignment to properly receive traffic to increase your chances of conversions. The sky will be the limit once you manage to balance everything properly. One vital idea you must keep in mind as an internet marketer is to find new customers as well as to strengthen the bond with your target market. There are many ways you can achieve this but via your blog is the easiest and best method. If you?re marketing anything online, then you need to have a blog to help you with that. Most of the blogs online, despite there being thousands of them, are not utilized to their maximum efficiency. You should have your own blog to promote your products and take advantage of this factor. You can use it to recommend your products and interact with your target market. You can both offer a lot of value as well as stand out from the competition.

As an Internet marketer, you should leverage various sources of getting exposure. For example, there are ways to promote your website that don?t even involve the internet, including print ads and old fashioned ?snail mail? advertising. While these strategies can be profitable, it?s important to test and track your results. Set up a separate landing page to track visitors who found your site from whatever ad you placed. This will give you a fair idea on how people are responding and what the response rate is like.

The more you know about your campaign, the easier it will be for you to invest your money in the right place. The core ideas of online marketing will always be the same, no matter how many methods there are to boost your sales. Using the right methods is the only way for you to create a powerful foundation for your business.

Video Games: The Past & Present | Video Gaming and Gaming

Article by Taisha Grant

Video games have a longer history than people realize. Many people assume that video games started only in the early 1980s. The history of video games actually goes back as far back as the end of World War II.

First, there seems to some confusion between what a computer game is and what a video game is. A computer is a game is controlled by a computer. You use a PC or a Macintosh to play the game. The device that you use primarily for a video game is a monitor or television. You usually must attach a device to the television to play. The device is called a video game system. Some examples of video game systems are Sony Playstation 2, Xbox and Nintendo Entertainment System. You can only see the game by attaching the game system to the monitor.

The first games were on computer, but without these games, they would not have been able to develop the video game system. They were usually on the technology that existed at the time such as oscilloscopes, university main frames and EDSAC computers. The very first computer game was a missile simulation game created by Thomas Goldsmith and Estle Ray Mann. A.S, Douglas then invented a tic-tac-toe game to be a part of his thesis at Cambridge University. You played this game on a very large Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator (EDSAC) computer.

In 1958, after being best known for his participation in building the first atomic bomb, he created a tennic computer game to entertain people that attended Brookhaven National Laboratory?s open houses. At MIT, in 1962, a man named Steve Russell made games called Spacewar and John?s Great Adventure for a PDP-1 mini-computer. In 1968, Ralph Baer was the one who invented the video game by creating the first video game console called the ?Television Gaming and Training Apparatus.? You could play a tennis game that was highly similar to arcade game called Pong. He later worked for Magnavox to create a video game console called the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972.

American?s jumped on the band wagon in the 1970s; the rest of the history of the video game console has been dominated by the Japanese. Nintendo and Sony, Japanese companies, have pretty much dominated the market since 1985. Nintendo is known for creating well-known characters like the Mario Brothers. The Mario Brothers were so popular that a movie was made about them. Sony is known for creating the PlayStation, the first video game console to have 32-bit technology. This allowed video games to have a 3D feel.

BIM as a process improvement of business for the construction industry

With the use of building information models (BIM) increases in construction projects increases the need for business process improvement projects. Cleveland Auto Insurance Quotes | Car Insurance Quotes

Obtaining low-priced quality auto coverage in Cleveland, Ohio is a concern common to most drivers in the region. With close to 3 million people living in the Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area, risks ranging from theft to auto accidents are much higher than they are in Ohio?s rural areas. Cleveland locals can still find reasonably priced coverage by comparing quotes from multiple carriers and searching for discounts and other methods to help them save.

Online Auto Policy Shopping

Finding a good deal on reliable car insurance protection is a task that?s much easier to take on these days thanks to the easy access most drivers have to the online market. Compare the rates that some of the top providers and find out what you could save simply by switching car insurance companies. Many consumers are surprised at the many ways leading carriers can help them cut their expenses. For instance:

- AAA Ohio features customized plans that drivers can tailor to their unique needs, as well as multiple payment options. If you just need a basic liability policy to meet the state minimum standards of $12,500 in bodily injury single per victim/$25,000 bodily injury per accident/$$7,500 property damage per accident, you can find it and get covered without putting a lot down up front.
- On the other hand, many drivers prefer more comprehensive coverage. Allstate recommends that Ohio motorists consider adding to the strength of their policies by including at least $100,000/$300,000 in liability and uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage, as well as $5,000 in medical payments coverage.

Whether they are looking for a basic liability policy to get them on the road and legally registered or a full coverage plan, it is smart for drivers to take a look at multiple carriers and compare their cost and coverage. Being insured is extremely important in Cleveland because of state legal requirements stipulating coverage and the penalties that can be levied for drivers who are caught without insurance.

Avoiding Penalties for Driving Uninsured

Financial responsibility is the law in the state of Ohio. This means that every driver must be prepared to handle the financial consequences of an at-fault accident. There are multiple options for Cleveland drivers to help them meet financial responsibility requirements, including:

- A bond from an authorized surety or insurance carrier
- A certificate of proof of financial responsibility signed by an authorized agent on a BMV form
- A BMV certificate stating that the certificate holder has a bond on deposit with the Ohio treasurer
- A certificate of bond issued by the BMV and signed by two individuals who each have at least $60,000 in real estate equity for use as collateral

The trouble with all of these options is that for most drivers in Cleveland, they require much more capital than those drivers actually possess. This underscores the importance of a state-compliant auto insurance policy, which gives locals their most affordable way to get out on the road legally.

There are numerous penalties written into the state?s auto insurance laws, such as loss of driving privileges, license plate reinstatement fees, SR22 filings, and other consequences. It is much better for motorists to remain compliant and focus their efforts on saving money on their Cleveland vehicle insurance.

Best Values on OH Car Insurance

To obtain the best possible deal on auto insurance, it is crucial for local consumers to shop around and let the market work on their behalf. Depending on their specific circumstances, different drivers will find different companies can help them save the most money. For instance:

- The General is a high-risk insurance specialist that works with drivers that have had DUIs, SR22 forms, moving violations, and citations for driving uninsured. The General also offers instant proof of insurance online for anyone who enrolls in coverage with them.
- Liberty Mutual offers alumni discounts for members of alumni associations affiliated with The Ohio State University, Ohio University, and other postsecondary institutions. College graduates may find that they can get a lower price from a provider offering this type of discount.
- Allstate and State Farm offer tremendous savings for safe drivers with a history of accident and claims-free driving.

Saving money on auto insurance in Cleveland can be a challenge, given the relatively high rate of auto accidents, thefts and other claims that insurers typically witness in the region. But drivers can protect themselves from paying too much when they examine their options and seek out the best fit in a carrier that offers the greatest opportunities to save.

(AP) ? Being voted preseason No. 1 is a tradition at Oklahoma, and this season is no different.

The Sooners will start out top-ranked in The Associated Press college football poll for the 10th time, more than any program in the country.

The defending Big 12 champions received 36 of 60 first-place votes and 1,464 points in the Top 25 released Saturday.

Auburn, last season's national champion, will start the season No. 23, one spot behind where it began in 2010.

If the rankings are any indication, the national title race could be a scramble.

No. 2 Alabama, one of a record eight Southeastern Conference teams in the preseason poll, wasn't far behind OU, receiving 17 first-place votes and 1,439 points.

No. 3 Oregon got four first-place votes, No. 4 LSU received one and No. 5 Boise State got two.

Florida State was No. 6, the Seminoles' best preseason ranking since starting the 2004 season at No. 5.

Heisman Trophy favorite Andrew Luck and Stanford were No. 7.

Rounding out the top 10 are Oklahoma's Big 12 rivals, Texas A&M (No. 8) and Oklahoma State (No. 9), and Nebraska (No. 10), in its first season in the Big Ten after leaving the Big 12.

No. 16 Notre Dame is ranked for the first time since early November 2009.

As for Oklahoma, no matter where it lands in the preseason, it always expects to make a run at a national championship in the end. It hasn't won it all, however, since 2000.

That's when coach Bob Stoops led the Sooners to their seventh AP national title in his second season in Norman. Since then, Oklahoma has lost three BCS championship games.

The Sooners have won the AP national title four times when they were preseason No. 1 (1956, 1974, 1975 and 1985). The last time they started a season top-ranked was 2003. That season, they lost the BCS championship game to LSU.

"We're very matter of fact," Stoops said this week. "All we think about is doing the work.

"We're also very aware we're not much different than about 12, 15 other teams that'll be competing for it that have legitimate chances to win it. What are we going to do differently to separate ourselves?"

Having the combination of quarterback Landry Jones and receiver Ryan Broyles is a good place to start.

Jones passed for 4,718 yards and 38 touchdowns last season, his second as a starter, and Broyles was his favorite target. The senior had 131 catches for 1,622 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Jones was forced into a starting role two years ago as a redshirt freshman when Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford went down with a shoulder injury. That was a tough season for the Sooners, who started ranked third but finished it 8-5.

Bradford was one of several key players Oklahoma lost to an injury that season, and Jones wasn't the only underclassman who played a bigger role than expected.

"Now two years from that they have benefited from the maturity and the experience gained from being on the field at an early age," Stoops said. "Our (offensive) line was young and now two years later they've got experience and some maturity to them. Same with Landry Jones. Same with Ryan Broyles."

Earlier this month, Sooners fans must have had flashbacks to Bradford's injury when linebacker and leading tackler Travis Lewis hurt his left foot in practice. He likely will miss at least the first four games, including a road trip to Florida State on Sept. 17.

"It's a big blow to us, there is no denying it," Stoops said.

Oklahoma has also been coping with the death of linebacker Austin Box, a would-be starter who overdosed on prescription painkillers in May.

"He's very close to so many guys and ... it wouldn't be right to brush it to the side," defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. "We're trying to move forward and deal with it as best we can."

The SEC has won five straight BCS title games and has plenty of candidates to make it six.

"We want to come out and win a national championship, to be undefeated," Alabama safety Mark Barron said. "Every time we step out on the field, one of our motivating factors is to be special."

South Carolina (No. 12), Arkansas (No. 15), Georgia (No. 19), Mississippi State (No. 20) and Florida (No. 22) give the SEC more teams in the preseason poll than any previous conference.

The Big Ten placed four teams in the rankings. Joining Nebraska are Wisconsin (No. 11), Michigan State (No. 17) and Ohio St. (No. 18).

With No. 21 Missouri, the Big 12 had four teams, too.

The Pac-12 had three teams, with No. 25 Southern California joining Oregon and Stanford.

The Atlantic Coast Conference placed two teams (Florida State and No. 13 Virginia Tech), as did the Mountain West Conference (Boise State and No. 14 TCU)

The Big East, which finished last season with no ranked teams, had one team in the preseason poll, No. 24 West Virginia.

Notable by its absence is Texas. Coming off a 5-7 season, the Longhorns are missing from the preseason Top 25 for the first time since 1998.

For now, ranked or not, every team is chasing Oklahoma.

"Who doesn't want to be No. 1?" Sooners cornerback Jamell Flemming said.
