Earlier this month I sat down with amenable young White Sox power pitcher Chris Sale to discuss his slider, a pitch that hit the majors full-force in August of 2010 when he revealed it to one of the best hitters in the game, Joe Mauer, and whiffed him with three straight in one of his first appearances in the majors.

Sale?s jaw-dropping slider was just wicked all right ? but surprisingly just the third-best on the team according to statistical analysis.

So now it?s time to throw open the curtains to all the major leagues and ferret out the top pitches of the season among pitchers headed to the playoffs, studying their runs saved per 100 pitches, a stat you can ferret out yourself over at FanGraphs, and came up with the top 10 ?out? pitches in the majors. (Note: to qualify for the study, a pitch must comprise at least 5 percent of a pitcher?s arsenal.)

While the Philadelphia Phillies are the team with the ballyhooed pitching staff, by sneaking into the postseason the Tampa Bay Rays have lodged three pitches ? by three different pitchers ? among the top 10 in the game. The Phillies also have three in the top 10, though Roy Halladay owns two of them. Ranking 11th is Cliff Lee?s curveball, to give Philly four, by three pitchers, in the top 11. And to prove that you don?t need sheer velocity to equal effectiveness, the top two ? and five of the top 10 ? pitches in the postseason are changeups.

In comparing the playoff pitchers to the overall field, we find out that the Phillies' Cole Hamels once again is No. 1 overall:

While Tampa nudged past them among playoff teams, the Phillies are the only team represented more than once in the top 10 overall and appear five times among the top five in six pitches (fastball, slider, cutter, curve, changeup, split). Also, check out the average velocity of Livan Hernandez?s curve, the eighth-most effective pitch in the game ? 66.4 mph ? and realize it?s another lesson in velocity not always equaling effectiveness. That?s doubly true when you consider that five of the top 10 most effective pitches in all of baseball are changeups.

No fastballs were used effectively enough to crack the top 10, either among playoff pitchers or overall, but here are the top five fastballs:

3. Doug Fister, M?s-Tigers (1.58)
4. Ian Kennedy, Diamondbacks (1.58)

Not to end on a bum note, but here are the five least effective pitches among playoff pitchers in 2011:

Wilson has the distinction of cracking both the top 10 best pitches (with his No. 10 cutter) and the top five worst with his flatulent changeup ? good thing he throws that just 6.7 percent of the time. The Cardinals also have the dubious distinction of having two pitchers with top five-worst pitches heading into the postseason.

Of the five listed above, only Colon's slider ranks in the top five worst pitches overall, coming in at No. 5.

I am neither a pitching coach, nor do I play one on TV, but wow, if I?m in Kansas City I?m steering Hochevar away from his imminently-hittable curveball and changeup (comprising 19 percent of his pitches in 2011) and suggesting a few more sliders, given that his slider is the second-best pitch in all of baseball and one he?s throwing less than 11 percent of the time.

Tencent to cooperate with American Express for online (Reuters)

HONG KONG (Reuters) ? China's largest Internet company Tencent Holdings Ltd plans to cooperate with American Express Co to provide cross-border online payments, a source said on Wednesday, as the country's electronics commerce sector grows rapidly.

Under the agreement, users of Tencent's Tenpay will be able to shop on key U.S. and British websites and make online payments, the source said.

Tencent's shares were up by 1.9 percent in early trade on Wednesday, outperforming the Hang Seng Index's 0.6 percent fall.

Alibaba Group's Alipay is now the biggest online payment system in China, where there are more than 400 million Internet users -- more than the U.S. population.

As of the second quarter, Alipay now commands 45.5 percent of such third-party online payments in China, while Tenpay owns 21.2 percent market share, research data showed.

Restaurant Review: Xe Lua

I love Vietnamese Food, but there are only two Vietnamese restaurants that I adore and love going to. One of them is Thai Son (located between Walker & Baxter Street) and Xe Lua (located between Canal & Mulberry Street). Xe Lua is one of my boyfriend's favorite restaurants in the entire Chinatown in New York City.

The restaurant has a interesting setting and decor. It's almost as if you're transformed into somewhere outside of New York City because the wallpaper is like a beach setting. Xe Lua has a very comfortable feeling to it and their food has never failed my expectations either.

Che 3 Mau is a Vietnamese rainbow iced cold drink. The Che 3 Mau that I tried has been reviewed in an earlier post. I typically don't like foods or drinks with peanuts, but since the peanuts are crushed in the Che 3 Mau, it added quite an interesting texture and taste to the drink. The drink itself is very inexpensive and only a total of $2.50.

This is my boyfriend's favorite menu item at Xe Lua because it's titled coincidentally as: Pho Xe Lua which is a house special fried rice noodle soup. Whenever he orders this, it usually comes out fast.

The broth is a beef a broth and has a very unique flavor to it that you can't get from any other broth. After adding the vegetables in, he likes to add the hoisin sauce and saracha sauce as well. The Pho Xe Lua is $6.50.

I typically don't order noodle soups unless I'm in a mood for it or it's cold and chilly outside. One of my favorite dishes to order at Xe Lua is Bun Thit Heo Nuong which is a Barbecue pork and shredded lettuce served with rice vermicelli.

It's a very simple dish and comes with a sweet and tangy fish sauce with a little bit of spice to it. I love ordering Bun and it's inexpensive as well. The Bun Thit Heo Nuong costs $6.00, not bad for a big bowl of noodles and other ingredients.

Xe Lua is a great restaurant to bring family or friends for a casual lunch or dinner. Their menu has an array of items such as: most popular appetizers, egg noodle, rice dishes, frog entrees, beef entrees, and much more. The staff at Xe Lua are friendly and on top of their duties.

Results from a Phase I/II study among the few to have been selected for presentation in the Presidential Session at the 2011 European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress (EMCC).

(BUSINESS WIRE)? FOR NON-US MEDIA ONLY

Patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) receiving BIBF 1120* as first-line treatment in combination with mFOLFOX6 showed a median progression-free survival of 10.6 months which was equivalent to bevacizumab plus mFOLFOX6 in a randomised two arm phase II study enrolling a total of 126 patients. Importantly, only 34.1% of those patients taking BIBF 1120* experienced any kind of serious adverse events, versus 53.7% of those taking bevacizumab.

More detailed results from the trial are:

The objective response rate (ORR), a measure of tumour shrinkage, was 61.2% in the BIBF 1120* arm and 53.7% in the bevacizumab arm.
Patients receiving BIBF 1120* had a similar progression-free survival rate at 9 months to those taking bevacizumab (63% vs. 69%).
Importantly, patients on BIBF 1120* experienced a lower frequency of serious gastrointestinal adverse events than those receiving bevacizumab (11.8% vs. 29.3%).

The study is ongoing in order to collect overall survival data. Phase III trials with larger patient populations will be considered to confirm these positive results and to further investigate the potential of BIBF 1120* in mCRC.

Unlike other angiokinase inhibitors which only target one receptor, BIBF 1120* is a novel triple angiokinase inhibitor that blocks three growth factor receptors simultaneously (VEGFR 1-3, PDGFR alpha and beta and FGFR 1-3).1 All three receptor types play a critical role in the formation and maintenance of new blood vessels (angiogenesis).Their blockade may lead to the inhibition of angiogenesis, and may ultimately stop tumour growth and spread.2, 3

?These new study results hold promise for further investigation of BIBF 1120* in patients suffering from advanced colorectal carcinoma,? said Prof Eric Van Cutsem, lead investigator for the trial, and Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Leuven, Belgium. ?It is utterly important to provide therapeutic options to our patients with less serious treatment complications, which is particularly significant as these patients have advanced disease. G20 pledge offers respite for shares, euro (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? European shares inched up from 26-month lows on Friday and the euro rose after the G20 major economies pledged to preserve financial stability, but risk sentiment remained fragile on fears of renewed recession in the developed world.

Finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of 20 said they would take "all steps necessary" to calm the global financial system and said central banks were ready to provide liquidity, helping the euro advance against the dollar.

The G20 pledge of action provided a respite for world stocks after they tumbled to their lowest level in 13 months on Thursday, hurt by the risk of new recessions in the United States and Europe and weaker economic data from China.

Metals prices bucked the trend, falling on worries that the gloomy economic outlook signaled lower industrial demand, and analysts said any G20-inspired market bounce would likely be short-lived.

The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index rose 0.4 percent, after dropping 4.7 percent on Thursday.

"It is a relief rally and investors are just picking up some stocks on the cheap," Mark Priest, senior trader at ETX Capital said.

"I do not see how everything has changed overnight. Kick-starting the economy is easier said than done and it will take a lot more than what has been put on the table."

The tentative gains in Europe contrasted with falls in Asia, where the MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan fell 3 percent to its lowest level since May 2010. This pulled the MSCI world equity index 0.1 percent down.

The G20 statement came as finance ministers and central bankers met in Washington, under pressure from investors to show action in the face of rising stresses in the financial system.

Several European banks have seen their share prices tumble and their cost of funding rise as investors worried about their exposure to debt issued by Greece and other debt-heavy euro zone countries.

Global stocks as measured by MSCI's All-Country World index are now in bear market territory -- defined as a fall of 20 percent or more -- having fallen 23 percent from their 2011 high in May.

The euro clawed off an 8-month low against the dollar and was last up 0.4 percent up at $1.3511 after the G20 pledge and as the tentative recovery in riskier assets prompted some profit-taking in the dollar.

The G20 also said the euro zone's rescue fund could be bolstered but traders and strategists said there was little that was new and the pledges needed to be followed up with action.

"I think there was some expectation in the market that they would signal concrete action or immediate coordinated steps but that language of their statement sticks very much to what we've heard from them in the past," said Todd Elmer, a currency strategist at Citi in Singapore.

"I wouldn't be surprised to see the slight bounce we have seen in the euro and other risky assets this morning start to unwind," he added.

Commodity markets, copper in particular, bore the brunt of the global rout that accompanied the Fed's gloomy outlook. Brent crude oil futures posted their biggest single-day loss in six weeks on Thursday and the Reuters-Jefferies CRB commodity index lost 4.4 percent.

Metals fell further on Friday, with copper losing 7 percent to $7,140 a metric ton, nickel down more than 8 percent and tin plunging more than 12 percent.

Brent futures were slightly firmer at $105.72 a barrel.

China's manufacturing slows as U.S., Europe stall (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's manufacturing sector contracted for a third consecutive month in September while a measure of inflation picked up, suggesting the world's No.2 economy may not be able to provide much of a counterweight to flagging U.S. and European growth.

HSBC's China Flash Purchasing Managers' Index, designed to give an early snapshot of the month's factory activity, dipped to 49.4 from August's final figure of 49.9. A reading below 50 indicates contraction.

Economists and Chinese officials have widely predicted China's growth will slow, largely because of waning exports. The country, known as the factory to the world, is especially vulnerable to fading demand from the United States and Europe, its two biggest export markets.

"The exports sector looks increasingly at risk given the shaky global fundamentals," said Connie Tse, an economist at FORECAST in Singapore.

While prospects dim abroad, demand has held up well at home. That should keep China's economic growth securely above 8 percent, the level that many economists see as the minimum required to generate enough jobs for the country's rapidly urbanizing population.

"Fears of a hard landing are unwarranted," said Qu Hongbin, China economist at HSBC.

However, that resilient domestic demand is also keeping inflation elevated. Thursday's data showed input costs rising rapidly, which could handcuff China's central bank.

Back in 2008, when the global economy tipped into a deep recession, China's quick policy response was credited with helping to hasten the worldwide recovery. As long as inflation is high, Beijing will be less inclined to repeat that feat.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index added to losses after the PMI figures were released, down more than 4 percent at 0515 GMT. Asia's markets were already on the back foot after the Federal Reserve warned of "significant" risks to the U.S. economy, and the weak Chinese data only worsened the mood.

A similar set of data for the euro zone, due later on Thursday, is expected to show the PMI dipped to 48.5 from August's 49.0, according to a Reuters poll of economists.

'SLUGFLATION' STRIKES

With growth near stall speed in both the United States and Europe, it is no surprise that China's export-led economy is slowing. Its exports pulled back from a record high in August.

The PMI figures pointed to further slowing ahead. Both the new orders and new export orders sub-indices fell further below the 50-point mark in September.

But rising inflation pressures pose a policy dilemma for the People's Bank of China. Many economists think the PBOC will pause in its year-long tightening campaign to see how the global turmoil plays out.

The PMI data showed the input price sub-index rose to 58.8 in September, a four-month high. If manufacturers are paying more to produce goods, those higher costs could filter into consumer prices, driving up the inflation rate.

That would leave the PBOC in a bind. Premier Wen Jiabao and other leaders have repeatedly stressed that cooling inflation remains the top policy priority.

"You're between a rock and a hard place here," Jim Walker, founder of Asianomics, said in a Reuters Insider interview. "If you try to control the inflation, the growth gets worse. If you try to increase the growth, the inflation gets worse."

China's central bank has raised interest rates five times and lifted banks' reserve requirements nine times since October. The consumer price index eased to 6.2 percent last month, pulling back slightly from a three-year high notched in July, but it remains well above China's 4 percent target.

DIVIDED G20

The global economy could use every bit of growth that China can generate. It is one of the few countries with both the capacity to ease policy and the size to make it matter.

Interest rates are already at or near record lows in the United States, Japan and Europe. All three regions carry heavy debt burdens that make it financially and politically difficult for them to provide more fiscal stimulus.

This will no doubt be a big topic of discussion among the Group of 20 rich and emerging economies, whose finance officials will meet in Washington later this week.

U.S. President Barack Obama stressed the need for coordinated G20 action to prop up global growth, a White House spokesman said.
