House speaker says Fla. primary likely Jan. 31 (AP)

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ? Florida is poised to hold its presidential primary on Jan. 31, a move that likely would mean an earlier start to the GOP nominating contests than what the national Republican Party had planned.

House Speaker Dean Cannon on Wednesday said that was the likely date for the Florida primary as the state works to ensure that it votes right behind the four that are the first to traditionally hold presidential primaries or caucuses ? Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.

The Republican said scheduling the primary for the last day of January would make Florida a major player in deciding the GOP nominee without jumping in front of those four states. He said Florida's hand was forced by other states that have moved up their dates, including Missouri, which has set its primary for Feb. 7.

"It's not a done deal," Cannon said in a telephone interview. He noted that the tentative date could change if states other than the first four try to jump or match Florida.

Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina have promised to protect their early voting status by moving their contests to earlier in the year if needed.

South Carolina Republican Party chairman Chad Connelly, who has sole authority to set a date, plans to hold a news conference Thursday. He said "it's likely" he will announce a date for South Carolina's primary. Georgia's secretary of state also has scheduled an announcement for Thursday.

"We're going to be the first in the South primary," Connelly said.

Cannon said he has been consulting with Republican Party officials and the offices of Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, and Republican Gov. Rick Scott.

Haridopolos believes a Jan. 31 primary would accomplish the goal of giving Florida a pivotal role in the selection of the next Republican presidential nominee, said his spokeswoman, Lyndsey Cruley.

Scott spokeswoman Karen Smith declined comment.

A special committee will meet Friday to formally select Florida's date. The eight voting members were selected by the two legislative leaders and Scott.

The panel consists of six current or former lawmakers, Republican ex-Gov. Bob Martinez and Scott's deputy chief of staff, Jenn Ungru. Secretary of State Kurt Browning is a ninth, nonvoting member and chairman.

The panel last week put off a decision so it could see what happens in other states, particularly South Carolina, usually the last of the four traditional states.

South Carolina's Connelly says he doesn't want to share a date with any other state, particularly one that breaks party rules.

A date earlier than March 6 for all but the four early states would violate Republican Party rules that allow only those traditional early voting states to go before then. Other states that break the rule could lose half of their delegates to the party's national convention.

"My job is to protect the voters of Florida and worry about the Republican National Committee rules second," Cannon said.

He said that still might leave Florida with about as many or more delegates than the first four states combined.

The Democratic Party has a similar rule. To avoid violating it, Florida Democrats probably will not hold a primary because President Barack Obama is seeking re-election. The party might select its convention delegates at a caucus later on.

Stardust discovered in far-off planetary systems

ScienceDaily (Sep. 29, 2011) ? Searching for extra-solar planets -- which are planets outside of our solar system -- is very popular these days. About 700 planets are known at the moment, a number that is continuously rising due to refined observational techniques. Professor Alexander Krivov and his team of astronomers of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany) just made a remarkable discovery: the scientists from the Astrophysical Institute were able to establish proof of so-called debris discs around two stars. The debris discs are remnants of the formation of the planets.

"We are dealing with enormous accumulations of chunks of matter which create dust when they collide," Alexander Krivov says. This dust is of greatest importance for the astronomers, because it helps to draw conclusions about the planet formation. There are even two debris discs in our solar system, the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt amongst whose bodies the dwarf planet Pluto belongs.

What makes the Jena discovery so special is the tremendous distance from our solar system to the stars with the debris discs. "These stars are hundreds of light years away from the Earth," according to Krivov. The particular focus is on TrES-2 in the Draco constellation and XO-5 in the Lynx constellation. Planets orbiting these stars can only be detected with the help of the transit method. It sounds like a simple principle: The night sky is photographed in regular intervals. Special software then checks the brightness of the stars on the images. If, in regular intervals, there are differences in brightness it is likely that a planet passes between the star and its observers.

The astronomers found evidence for the stardust with the help of photometric analysis. At first the characteristics of the stars can be analysed with it. If there are irregularities in the invisible infrared range, they point to the existence of stardust. Krivov says: "The dust is warmed up by the star and radiates heat. We see that radiation curve is above the radiation curve of the star as a clear sign of the existence of stardust."

Professor Krivov draws an impressive comparison for the search of debris discs in the vastness of the universe: it is as if you would detect an ice-cream cooled down to minus 130 degrees with a heat detector in a 5,000 kilometer distance from Jena. Alexander Krivov's team of scientists concentrated its search for debris disc candidates on about 100 known extra-solar systems with transiting planets. Of these systems, they found 52 in the observational results of the US-American space telescope WISE.

Earlier this month I sat down with amenable young White Sox power pitcher Chris Sale to discuss his slider, a pitch that hit the majors full-force in August of 2010 when he revealed it to one of the best hitters in the game, Joe Mauer, and whiffed him with three straight in one of his first appearances in the majors.

Sale?s jaw-dropping slider was just wicked all right ? but surprisingly just the third-best on the team according to statistical analysis.

So now it?s time to throw open the curtains to all the major leagues and ferret out the top pitches of the season among pitchers headed to the playoffs, studying their runs saved per 100 pitches, a stat you can ferret out yourself over at FanGraphs, and came up with the top 10 ?out? pitches in the majors. (Note: to qualify for the study, a pitch must comprise at least 5 percent of a pitcher?s arsenal.)

While the Philadelphia Phillies are the team with the ballyhooed pitching staff, by sneaking into the postseason the Tampa Bay Rays have lodged three pitches ? by three different pitchers ? among the top 10 in the game. The Phillies also have three in the top 10, though Roy Halladay owns two of them. Ranking 11th is Cliff Lee?s curveball, to give Philly four, by three pitchers, in the top 11. And to prove that you don?t need sheer velocity to equal effectiveness, the top two ? and five of the top 10 ? pitches in the postseason are changeups.

In comparing the playoff pitchers to the overall field, we find out that the Phillies' Cole Hamels once again is No. 1 overall:

While Tampa nudged past them among playoff teams, the Phillies are the only team represented more than once in the top 10 overall and appear five times among the top five in six pitches (fastball, slider, cutter, curve, changeup, split). Also, check out the average velocity of Livan Hernandez?s curve, the eighth-most effective pitch in the game ? 66.4 mph ? and realize it?s another lesson in velocity not always equaling effectiveness. That?s doubly true when you consider that five of the top 10 most effective pitches in all of baseball are changeups.

No fastballs were used effectively enough to crack the top 10, either among playoff pitchers or overall, but here are the top five fastballs:

Not to end on a bum note, but here are the five least effective pitches among playoff pitchers in 2011:

The Cardinals also have the dubious distinction of having two pitchers with top five-worst pitches heading into the postseason.

Of the five listed above, only Colon's slider ranks in the top five worst pitches overall, coming in at No. 5.

I am neither a pitching coach, nor do I play one on TV, but wow, if I?m in Kansas City I?m steering Hochevar away from his imminently-hittable curveball and changeup (comprising 19 percent of his pitches in 2011) and suggesting a few more sliders, given that his slider is the second-best pitch in all of baseball and one he?s throwing less than 11 percent of the time.

Tencent to cooperate with American Express for online (Reuters)

HONG KONG (Reuters) ? China's largest Internet company Tencent Holdings Ltd plans to cooperate with American Express Co to provide cross-border online payments, a source said on Wednesday, as the country's electronics commerce sector grows rapidly.

Under the agreement, users of Tencent's Tenpay will be able to shop on key U.S. and British websites and make online payments, the source said.

Tencent's shares were up by 1.9 percent in early trade on Wednesday, outperforming the Hang Seng Index's 0.6 percent fall.

Alibaba Group's Alipay is now the biggest online payment system in China, where there are more than 400 million Internet users -- more than the U.S. population.

As of the second quarter, Alipay now commands 45.5 percent of such third-party online payments in China, while Tenpay owns 21.2 percent market share, research data showed.
