Discover How to Use Video Marketing For Your ? ? Three ...

In the event that you?re not supplementing your Internet marketing campaign with video marketing, you?re deliberately ignoring a lot of profit that can be made on your part. In order to attract high quality, targeted traffic to your website on a budget you?ll definitely want to make use of video marketing. The most successful internet marketers have already been perfecting this advertising method to make the profits of their online businesses soar, and you can too! The article that follows will talk about how to effectively begin an internet marketing campaign and to reap long term benefits for your business.

Welbeck Group
Create a Full Blown Video Sales Page

Many marketers underestimate the power of Twitter but what it can do for you is unquestionable. Twitter is a very easy way to attract the targeted traffic you need, you can use it to network with all the right people. If you have videos and put them on your Twitter, you?ll immediately gain a higher level of exposure, as well as more conversions. It?s almost like putting your videos on steroids. When you want to make your business grow, the viral nature of video through Twitter is something you absolutely cannot ignore. When a person on Twitter sees an interesting tweet they can ?retweet? it, which means they can spread your videos to an ever wider audience, which will then in turn spread them even further. All this does is prove that your video marketing can reach unprecedented heights when social networking is thrown in the mix.

Understand the Market You Deal In

Publishing videos on different sites is a great way to increase traffic to you site. You just want to make sure you go about it in the right way. Every minute of every day sees millions of new videos uploaded to the Internet. Therefore, you have to finish the video with a call to action, so you can make it work for you. Television and online videos are treated the same way by people; therefore, you have to get their attention within the first few seconds. So if you place your website URL only at one place, when the video ends, the viewer might not catch it. Try to intersperse it throughout your video; you might even just be able to embed it at the bottom of the video throughout, so they see it. The best way to do this is to have the URL pop up every 5 ? 10 seconds before it fades off. Also, how long your video is will largely determine the number of times your URL is displayed to your customer. Try to figure out your ideal numbers for that. And yes, don?t forget to bold your call to action, it pays.

Not only is internet video marketing effective but it can be a crucial part of setting your business apart. If you?ve never considered making internet video marketing part of your business? campaigns you don?t know how much potential traffic you?re losing every day. Video sharing is widely popular on the internet and sites such as Youtube have huge audiences just waiting to be tapped into, people not only use these videos as entertainment but as a way to influence their own purchasing decisions. Start on the journey of video marketing so you can improve your business through one of the most rapidly growing marketing tools available on the internet.

Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge: Colorectal Cancer ...

March is colorectal cancer awareness month. Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer among men behind skin, prostate and lung cancer, and the fourth most common among women after skin, breast and lung cancer. The risk of colorectal cancer increases with age with more than 90 percent of cases occurring in people who are 50 years old or older (CDC).?

According to the NCI, risk factors for colorectal cancer are:

  • being 50 years old or older, ?
  • ?having a family history of colon cancer or polyps,
  • colorectal polyps,
  • a personal history of cancer, especially ovarian, endometrial or breast cancer,
  • ulcerative colitis or Crohn?s disease,
  • hereditary conditions like familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer (HNPCC),
  • a diet of high fat and low calcium, folate and fiber and
  • cigarette smoking.
It is important to get tested for colorectal cancer if you are 50 years old or older because it can save your life. Many cancers in the early, treatable stages do not cause symptoms so it is important to get tested regularly. Symptoms usually begin to emerge when the cancer has progressed. Some of the symptoms of colorectal cancer include:
  • Constipation or Diarrhea
  • Blood in or on the stool
  • Weight loss with no known reason
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • The sensation that the bowel does not empty completely
  • Narrow stools (which indicate an obstruction in the colon)
  • Chronic abdominal discomfort, like gas pains or cramps or feeling bloated or full

These symptoms may be caused by something other than cancer, but it is important to visit a doctor so that a proper diagnosis can be made. For more information about colon cancer or screenings in our area, call the Cancer Services Library/Resource Center at 225-927-2273.?

Each week, Cancer Services posts a Cancer Q&A in the Health section of The Advocate.

West Antarctic ice shelves tearing apart at the seams

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? A new study examining nearly 40 years of satellite imagery has revealed that the floating ice shelves of a critical portion of West Antarctica are steadily losing their grip on adjacent bay walls, potentially amplifying an already accelerating loss of ice to the sea.

The most extensive record yet of the evolution of the floating ice shelves in the eastern Amundsen Sea Embayment in West Antarctica shows that their margins, where they grip onto rocky bay walls or slower ice masses, are fracturing and retreating inland. As that grip continues to loosen, these already-thinning ice shelves will be even less able to hold back grounded ice upstream, according to glaciologists at The University of Texas at Austin's Institute for Geophysics (UTIG).

Reporting in the Journal of Glaciology, the UTIG team found that the extent of ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea Embayment changed substantially between the beginning of the Landsat satellite record in 1972 and late 2011. These changes were especially rapid during the past decade. The affected ice shelves include the floating extensions of the rapidly thinning Thwaites and Pine Island Glaciers.

"Typically, the leading edge of an ice shelf moves forward steadily over time, retreating episodically when an iceberg calves off, but that is not what happened along the shear margins," says Joseph MacGregor, research scientist associate and lead author of the study. An iceberg is said to calve when it breaks off and floats out to sea.

"Anyone can examine this region in Google Earth and see a snapshot of the same satellite data we used, but only through examination of the whole satellite record is it possible to distinguish long-term change from cyclical calving," says MacGregor.

The shear margins that bound these ice shelves laterally are now heavily rifted, resembling a cracked mirror in satellite imagery until the detached icebergs finally drift out to the open sea. The calving front then retreats along these disintegrating margins. The pattern of marginal rifting and retreat is hypothesized to be a symptom, rather than a trigger, of the recent glacier acceleration in this region, but this pattern could generate additional acceleration.

"As a glacier goes afloat, becoming an ice shelf, its flow is resisted partly by the margins, which are the bay walls or the seams where two glaciers merge," explains Ginny Catania, assistant professor at UTIG and co-author of the study. "An accelerating glacier can tear away from its margins, creating rifts that negate the margins' resistance to ice flow and causing additional acceleration."

The UTIG team found that the largest relative glacier accelerations occurred within and upstream of the increasingly rifted margins.

The observed style of slow-but-steady disintegration along ice-shelf margins has been neglected in most computer models of this critical region of West Antarctica, partly because it involves fracture, but also because no comprehensive record of this pattern existed. The authors conclude that several rifts present in the ice shelves suggest that they are poised to shrink further.

PFT: Televangelist rips Broncos over Tebow trade

display_imageGetty Images

The NFL may not be interested in exploring the depths of the intentional-injury rabbit hole, but the disclosure of a bounty system in New Orleans and multiple reports of similar programs elsewhere has created a feeding frenzy when it comes to accounts of teams encouraging players to attempt to hurt opponents.

The latest allegation comes from former Vikings defensive lineman Brad Culpepper. who claims that, in the 1990s, the defensive linemen were coached on the finer points of knocking the quarterback out of the game.

?We practiced techniques to injure players,? Culpepper said on Mike Bianchi?s Orlando-based radio show, via Jeremy Fowler of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.? ?We would dive on a mat and aim for the knee portion of a pad like it was the quarterback, and we would practice going at that and trying to bust the quarterback?s knee. You knock the quarterback out, you win the game. . . .? If you pull on their arm and land on their shoulder, you can dislocate [the shoulder] and then they?re out.? We used to practice that, too.?

Former Vikings defensive end Chris Doleman disagrees.? ?That wasn?t a part of it,? Doleman told Fowler.? ?I would know.? I was a starter.? It was never about hurting a quarterback.? Intimidating a quarterback, knocking him around ? absolutely.? One hundred percent.? But not injuring. . . .

?Maybe why [Culpepper's] going in that direction is this, for example ? when you try to get a quarterback down, the way to strip a ball is to get his arms straight,? Doleman said. ?If you look at film, when I?m going after a quarterback, we put our arms down on his arms, like we?re putting him in a bag, so he has no control over the ball.? Can?t throw it.? But that?s proper technique, nothing else.? Our thing was, cause a disruption in the backfield ? but to get the ball back, not to hurt.?

Culpepper contends that no money was offered for inflicting injury on quarterbacks.? ?I would have done anything to gain favor with the coaches or my teammates,? Culpepper said.

Complicating matters is that, from 1992 through 1995, the Vikings? defensive coordinator was Tony Dungy, who enjoys a stellar reputation throughout league and media circles.? But the defensive line coach from 1992 through 1994 was John Teerlinck, who found himself summoned to the league office in 1996 for a meeting with Commissioner Paul Tagliabue regarding Teerlinck?s reputation for instructing defenders to go low on quarterbacks.

Thus, while it?s possible that Teerlinck was teaching defenders to aim low and/or to drive shoulders into the ground, it undoubtedly would have been something that happened without Dungy?s knowledge or involvement.

Indeed, Culpepper spent only two seasons with the Vikings (1992 and 1993) before joining the Buccaneers, where Dungy later became head coach.? Given that Culpepper worked with Dungy for four years in Tampa and only two in Minnesota and given that Teerlinck never coached for the Bucs and given that Culpepper isn?t claiming that the same practices were used in Tampa, it?s safe to assume that, if anything dirty was going on in Minnesota, Teerlinck was teaching it.

UPDATE 2:53 p.m. ET:? In the full radio interview, Culpepper specifically mentions Teerlinck.? Culpepper never mentions Dungy.? Culpepper also says that ?none of this stuff went on in Tampa.?

Army sergeant charged in Afghan massacre

FILE - In this Aug. 23, 2011, file photo provided by the Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System, Sgt. Robert Bales takes part in exercises at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif. It is still not known if Bales, who allegedly massacred 17 Afghans, was ever diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, but even if he had been that alone would not have prevented him from being sent back to war. The Army diagnosed 76,176 soldiers with PTSD between 2000 and 2011. Many returned to the battlefield after mental health providers determined their treatment worked and their symptoms had gone into remission. The case of Bales has sparked debate about whether the practice needs to be re-examined. (AP) ? Charges filed Friday against Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales reflect the horror of the crime: 17 counts of premeditated murder, more than half of them children, during a shooting rampage in southern Afghanistan. But while Afghans are calling for swift and severe punishment, it will likely be months, even years, before the public ever sees Bales in a courtroom.

One only has to look at two recent and similarly high-profile cases to see that the wheels of military justice turn slowly.

It's been nearly 29 months since an Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Hasan, allegedly killed 13 and injured two dozen more at Fort Hood, Texas. His trial is scheduled to begin in June. And it's been 21 months since the military charged intelligence analyst Bradley Manning with leaking hundreds of thousands of pages of classified information. It took nine months before he was deemed competent to stand trial.

The Bales case is likely to be equally complex, involving questions of his mental state and the role that the stresses of war and possible previous head injuries may have played in his alleged actions. Most of the eyewitnesses are the Afghan villagers and survivors who may be brought in for the trial.

The military on Friday charged Bales with 17 counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder and six counts of assault in the March 11 pre-dawn massacre in two southern Afghanistan villages near his base. The father of two from Lake Tapps, Wash., was officially informed of the 29 charges just before noon at the U.S. military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he is confined.

The maximum punishment for a premeditated murder conviction is death, dishonorable discharge from the armed forces, reduction to the lowest enlisted grade and total forfeiture of pay and allowances, according to Col. Gary Kolb, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. The mandatory minimum sentence is life imprisonment with the chance of parole.

The charges offered few details of what happened that night. But the 38-year-old soldier is accused of walking off his base with his 9mm pistol and M-4 rifle, which was outfitted with a grenade launcher, killing four men, four women, two boys and seven girls and burning some of the bodies. The ages of the children were not disclosed.

In the most detailed descriptions of the shootings to date, the charges say Bales shot a young girl in the head, a young boy in the thigh, a man in the neck and a woman in the chest and groin. The documents also say that he "shot at" another girl and boy, but apparently did not hit them.

The attack occurred in the Panjwai district of Kandahar Province, the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban. The dead bodies were found in Balandi and Alkozai villages ? one north and one south of the base.

Members of the Afghan delegation investigating the killings said one Afghan guard working from midnight to 2 a.m. saw a U.S. soldier return to the base around 1:30 a.m. Another Afghan soldier who replaced the first and worked until 4 a.m. said he saw a U.S. soldier leaving the base at 2:30 a.m. It's unknown whether the Afghan guards saw the same U.S. soldier. If the gunman acted alone, information from the Afghan guards would suggest that he returned to base in between the shooting rampages.

It also is not known whether the suspect used grenades, Kolb said. The grenade launcher attachment is added to the standard issue M-4 rifle for some soldiers but not all, he said. Bales was assigned to provide force protection at the base.

The case against him is the worst allegation of killing of civilians by an American in Afghanistan and has severely strained U.S.-Afghan ties at a critical time in the decade-old war.

The Taliban said they had no faith that the U.S. military court system would bring the shooter to justice. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email to The Associated Press that the insurgents themselves would avenge the killings by killing U.S. forces one-by-one.

Not addressed in the charges are suggestions that Bales may have been drinking. On Friday, a senior U.S. defense official said Bales was drinking in the hours before the attack on Afghan villagers, violating a U.S. military order banning alcohol in war zones. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the charges before they were filed.

U.S. officials, however, have said that additional charges could be filed as time goes on. Bales' civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, said Friday the government will have a hard time proving its case and that his client's mental state will be an important issue. Bales was on his fourth tour of duty, having served three tours in Iraq, where he suffered head and foot injuries.

Meanwhile, an attorney for Bales' wife said the couple have spoken by telephone twice since he was detained. Attorney Lance Rosen said Bales called his wife, Karilyn, first from overseas shortly after the March 11 pre-dawn massacre, then from Fort Leavenworth on Wednesday.

Rosen said Bales and his wife were warned the call Wednesday would be monitored and told they would only have 10 minutes to talk. They talked about family matters and "reaffirmed their love for each other," Rosen said. He also said the family has set up a defense fund to help pay for Bales' legal fees.

The charges set in motion what will likely be a lengthy military justice process.

"Usually in military and civilian criminal cases, delay accrues to the benefit of the accused. So there will be some maneuvering to put it off a while," said Gary Solis, retired Marine prosecutor and adjunct law professor at Georgetown University. "I think it's many months before we're going to see this thing go to trial, if it ever goes to trial."

Bales may face what the military calls a "sanity board," to determine his mental state at the time, and whether he is competent to stand trial.

Since Bales was assigned to a unit based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state? the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division ? the charges were sent Friday to a special court-martial convening authority, the 17th Fires Brigade, an artillery unit at the post. Lewis-McChord spokesman Lt. Col. Gary Dangerfield said officials at the post will have the legal responsibility of trying and managing the case against Bales, but it was not clear where the proceedings would actually take place.

Maj. Christopher Ophardt at Lewis-McChord said the preliminary hearing may not take place for a few months and it would likely be several more months after that before a trial would begin ? perhaps two years from now depending on motions and other pretrial actions.

Jeffrey Addicott, who previously served as the senior legal adviser to the U.S. Army's Special Forces, said the military justice system typically moves faster than civilian courts. But he said the international political implications may cause this case to drag on for years.

"When we have these high-publicity cases, the military becomes like a deer in the headlights. They have just one speed: extremely slow," Addicott said, adding that he expects the defense team to use all tactics to slow the process.

According to military lawyers and experts, now that the charges have been filed, the next step is for the military is to decide whether there is enough evidence to refer the charges to a preliminary hearing. That hearing, what the military calls an Article 32, would determine whether there's probable cause to believe a crime was committed and that the person charged did it.

Once the Article 32 is over, the hearing officer recommends to a general officer whether or not the case should go to trial. That general officer then decides whether the case should go to a court-martial in front of a military judge.

Throughout the proceedings, the lawyers will be able to file a wide range of motions, including requests for more time to review evidence.

Browne said he thinks the U.S. government will have difficulty proving its case against Bales because "there is no crime scene" and a lack of important physical evidence like fingerprints. And he has said he wants to visit Afghanistan.

Prosecutors, meanwhile, will rely on evidence collected from the villages, including any statements by witnesses and Afghan civilians who were injured that night, as well as any observations by other soldiers about Bales' conduct and his movement on or off the base.

Two military defense attorneys also have been assigned to his case.

Ophardt said Bales' family is still living on base but has the option of moving off at any time.

Penney Law 20th Year | Sacramento Personal Injury Lawyer ...

FRED PENNEY AND PENNEY AND ASSOCIATES LAWYERS 20TH YEAR

I remember the first personal injury trial I had. ?It was in beautiful Plumas County at a very old historic courthouse. ?I had just passed my bar and a national personal injury law firm entrusted me to take many of their difficult cases to trial where the odds of winning were very low. ?I was not an employee but had started the Law Offices Of Frederick W. Penney and was an independent trial lawyer for this firm. ?I took the challenge to help the clients that nobody would take and to hone my skills as a litigator. ?This first trial pitted me against skilled and experienced litigators and lasted over one week. ?I was arguing a disputed auto/truck accident case where a county snow plow was stopped over night on a bridge without its lights on. ?The reason no personal injury lawyer wanted to take the case to trial was because the snow plow was on its side of the road and my client had a number of felony convictions for numerous things. ?But I was Fred Penney a new personal injury trial lawyer and I did not care what the odds were, I was willing to take a chance on a case nobody else wanted. ?I wanted to try and help the client (where their current attorney refused to take the case to trial due to the high odds of losing) and take the personal injury case to trial. ?I learned valuable lessons during that trial having been in practice less than one year (actually I think around 6 months). ?I did not make any mistakes and had a great brother that was a top prosecutor at the District Attorney?s office to give me legal advise and guide me through the jury trial process (note he would give me tips over the phone, he did not go to trial with me).

That was the birth of Law Offices of Fred Penney, Penney and Associates and Fred Penney as a lawyer. ?After that I had some great trial verdicts that I am very proud of. ?I began working on cases that involved trucking accidents, auto accidents, dog bites, brain injuries, boating accidents, ATV accidents, death cases, bike accidents, pedestrian accidents, product accidents and many more serious injury cases.

The Penney law firm began to grow at which time I began to hire some of the top insurance industry personal injury trial lawyers in the state?some of which still work at the firm today. ?Our good reputation throughout the legal and non-legal community grew as I added great former insurance company litigators to the firm. ?There have been many that have tried to duplicate the Penney firm and those even trying to copy Penney and Associates or attorney Fred Penney. ?But, the Penney lawyer and Penney and Associates name continues to be a strong force in the legal and non-legal community with the help of great personal injury attorney?s that have joined the Penney and Associates law firm team.

The Law Offices of Fred Penney (now Penney and Associates) started in 1992 with a small office off of Professional drive in Roseville. ?Presently as of 2012 the firm now has 6 full time offices and a number of satellite offices throughout California. ?Penney and Associates law firm has fully staffed offices in Newport Beach, Roseville, Sacramento, Loomis, Chico and Rocklin. ?Penney and Associates has fully functional satellite offices in Santa Clara (San Jose and Sunnyvale area), San Francisco, Fairfield, Bakersfield and other areas throughout California.

Make no mistake there is no other Penney and Associates (some spell it Penny and Associates or Penny lawyer) ?law firm in the state. ?Look at our lawyers accomplishments and compare them to any other firm that tries to duplicate us and make a choice of which personal injury lawyer you would like to litigate your injury case? ?Look at the Penney and Associates legal website for ?only few? of the latest results on our cases. ?Remember many big high profile cases are won or settled by Penney and Associates with confidentiality agreements so we cannot disclose the information to the public.

Our experienced lawyers are arguably second to none. ?For example Larry Eslinger has been a litigating personal injury trial lawyer since the 1970?s with valuable trial experience with all types of Personal injury cases. ?Before Penney and Associates, Larry worked as one of CSAA?s lead trial lawyers for close to 30 years. ? ?Personal Injury attorney Robert Brannen is a former trial lawyer that represented Farmers Insurance policy holders. ?Stewart Galbraith and James Gingrich in Chico were partners in a personal injury defense firm for years that bore their name. ?They represented a number of Insurance companies in defending personal injury cases against firms such as Penney and Associates. ?They now have teamed up using their valuable trial experience to represent injured people and their families in Chico, Red Bluff, Redding, Paradise, Yuba City, Marysville and other small communities in Northern California. ?Stewart is the managing lawyer of Penney and Associates in Chico. ?Mike Steffen is a valuable asset to Penney and Associates and runs the Rocklin office. ?Mike has been a well respected trial lawyer for decades representing CSAA (AAA) for years. ?In fact he was the managing attorney for CSAA?s in-house law firm that bore his name in the 1990?s. ?Arnold Hernandez, managing attorney for the Penney and Associates Newport Beach office, is known as one of the best law research attorney and legal minds in the firm. ?Kevin Elder, one of our top litigators in the firm, is handling many of the firm?s top cases. ?Kevin has valuable trial experience in all aspects of personal injury law. ?Kevin was a former partner in a firm that represented CSAA, government entities and water parks in defending against personal injury cases. ?Taking that valuable trial experience Kevin Elder joined Penney and Associates to hit some big personal injury verdicts and continues to this day to build the Penney and Associates personal injury lawyer name. ?There are many others (too numerous to mention) that are part of the Penney and Associates team that have helped build the firm to what it is today.

Though some might see this as attorney Fred Penney?s brag blog, I am fine with that as Penney and Associates has been built on a firm foundation of experience, integrity and just plain hard work that in my mind has put Penney and Associates at the top of the list of law firms in California.

If you or a family member has been injured in an accident call Fred Penney and Penney and Associates for a free initial consultation at 1-800-616-4529.

This is Fred Penney and I approve of this Blog!

Mobile Game Developers No Longer Pining for Console Love

Previous Post: Flurry Friday Episode 16 March 16th 2012: 3 Weeks of Travel &nbsp

by Chris Skaggs

I?ve been going to the annual GDC in San Francisco every year since Soma Games launched the first title in 2009 while the world of mobile gaming exploded into existence virtually overnight. Every year those of us who make mobile games have seen ourselves (and have been treated) as the younger upstart brothers to console game makers. We saw ourselves as inferiors and we were treated as tag-alongs. But this year I?m seeing something very different : mobile game shops are suddenly disinterested in ?growing up? to become console/PC shops ? and the large, older-brother game studios seem confused as to why they aren?t getting the love they?ve always enjoyed.

When we made our first mobile game, G:Into The Rain there was a very conscious notion that this was a stepping-stone. It was a way to dip our toes in the water, learn a few key skills, and all part of our deliberate plan to make a future epic XBox title. We were also perfectly normal in that regard. Every mobile game developer we talked too, both at GDC and elsewhere basically had the same plan. After all that was where the ?real? game developers were. That?s where blockbuster hits like Call of Duty or BioShock were posting such inspiring headlines. Mobile gaming was to console or PC gaming what the Memphis Redbirds are to the St. Louis Cardinals. We were rookies and we all longed to make it to the big league.

This relationship was dysfunctional from both ends though. We may have looked up to our console counterparts with an unhealthy degree of hero worship but they also looked down on us with a kind of aristocratic patronization. ?Thats cute kid. Come back when you can afford a real game engine.? By last year?s conference, the disdain had turned into something more like contempt as several sessions sought to address the ?problem? of mobile gaming ? specifically that we were sucking up all the attention and resources from real games.

Now in 2012, I?m suddenly aware of some rather obvious facts as I hob-nob quite comfortably with a half dozen very normal, unassuming, sudden mobile millionaires at the TouchArcade party:

  • Lightning keeps on striking with hit after hit after hit ?
  • I can make a very, very profitable game in just a few months?
  • I can do the above with a budget that is literally 1/1,000th of what a AAA title is likely to cost?
  • The newer hardware like the iPad 4G has as much pixel power as an XBox?

What?s the motivation to move into console gaming at all?
Who needs the risk, the headache, the multi-year commitment? Maybe this mobile thing isn?t a stepping stone after all. Maybe its a quite sufficient and complete segment all on its own ? a segment with far more generous numbers. Perhaps this is why I?m hearing stories of VCs looking to invest in mobile but hearing ?No thanks ? we don?t need your money.?

In 2011 GDC felt as though big studios still had the lion?s share of the attention ? but this year it seems very different. The difference is easiest seen by glancing around any lounge, any party, or any hang out in town. Everybody, and I mean everybody, is passing around iPads and Androids and Kindles to show off whatever mobile project they?re excited about. They are handing their own personal devices around instead of queuing up at the gorgeous branded game kiosks. Even sitting in the Microsoft lounge with a dozen XBox and Kinnect games waiting to be played I keep watching the staff trying to entice people to dance or shoot or jump?but instead we?re all sitting in their rather stylish chairs doing something else ? working our touch screens, totally content to play Mega Jump or Wind Up Knight while the Halo station sits there, alone, silently asking if its 15minutes is up. We truly are no longer pining for console love.

Mid-Michigan residents needed for nationwide cancer study : News ...

Read?more: Local, AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, Jenni Beamer, Liz Macfarland, Weyi, Nbc25, Cancer, Health

Mid-Michigan residents have a remarkable opportunity to join the movement to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by participating in Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3), a historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations.

By enrolling in the study, participants will help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer, which ultimately will save lives. To enroll, residents must be between the ages of 30 and 65 and never have been diagnosed with cancer. They also must be willing to make a long-term commitment involving brief follow-up surveys at home for the next 20 to 30 years. The study will enroll a diverse population of 300,000 people across the United States.

Enrollment will take place at Baker College of Flint, 1050 W. Bristol Rd., in the Technology Building from March 20-24 and the American Cancer Society Office, 1480 W. Center Rd, Suite #1, in Essexville from March 20-28. Residents can make an appointment to enroll at their leisure by calling toll-free 1-888-604-5888 or going to?www.cps3midmichigan.com.

During enrollment individuals provide a waist measurement, give a small blood sample and complete a comprehensive survey online or at the enrollment site. Over the course of the study, participants will be asked to fill out follow-up surveys every few years.?

CPS-3 holds the best hope of identifying new and emerging cancer risks. Previous cancer prevention studies by the American Cancer Society have been instrumental in helping to identify some of the major factors that can affect cancer risk. These studies have uncovered the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer; the significant impact of being overweight or obese on risk of cancer occurrence and death; the link between aspirin use and reduced risk of colon cancer; and the link between postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy and various gynecologic cancers such as breast and ovarian cancer.

Does strategic corporate philanthropy achieve its profitability ...

When talking about corporate giving, a strong ideological and theoretical debate inevitably comes into play. The conflict between Friedman?s stockholder view and Freeman?s stakeholder view has been widely discussed in the literature (Bird, Hall et al. 2007). The first theory (Friedman, M. (1970). The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profits. The New York Times Magazine), which pertains to a traditional economic perspective, states that the only aim of a firm is to increase its shareholders? wealth, regards corporate assets as belonging to stockholders, and the disposal of corporate assets in favour of charities as a theft of the stockholders. The second theory (Freeman, E. R. (1984). Strategic management: a stakeholder approach. Boston, Pitman) places the business in its social and natural environment, and considers it is, at least partly, responsible for the nuisances its activity generates. As a consequence, this business must limit its nuisances, operate fairly, demonstrate citizenship and be socially responsible.

Although these two theories do not have the same position about the role of the firm within the community, an apparent compromise seems to have been found, as corporate donations are today called by many, ?strategic corporate philanthropy? (Saiia, D. H., A. B. Caroll, et al. (2003). ?Philanthropy as Strategy: When Corporate Charity Begins at Home.? Business & Society 42(2): 169).

Many authors argue that companies miss both their ?doing good? and their ?doing well? objectives in corporate philanthropy. For example:

- Brammer, Millington et al. (p.242) find that ?strategic motives appear to play little or no role in determining the level of philanthropic contributions, which instead appear to be driven by resource availability, the presence of previous commitments and relationships, and senior managerial discretion.? (Brammer, S., A. Millington, et al. (2006). ?Is philanthropy strategic? An analysis of the management of charitable giving in large UK companies.? Business Ethics: A European Review 15(3): 234-245)

- Porter and Kramer (p.58) explain that ?the way corporate philanthropy is practised today, Friedman is right. The majority of corporate contribution programs are diffuse and unfocused? (Porter, M. E. and M. R. Kramer (2002). ?The Competitive Advantage of Corporate Philanthropy.? Harvard Business Review 80(12): 56-69)

- Bruch and Walter observe (p.49) that it is often due to ineffectiveness of management: ?Although the relevance of corporate philanthropy is widely accepted, few companies achieve significant, lasting societal impact because most lack a cohesive strategy. Effective philanthropy must be run no less professionally than the core business? (Bruch, H. and F. Walter (2005). ?The Keys to Rethinking Corporate Philanthropy.? MIT Sloan Management Review 47(1): 49-55)
