It's rather the past. That is, 'cloud' is just a new buzzword for a 40+ years old concept.
The concept is simple: make someone else care for your IT needs and only do a very small part of your IT management and (maybe) development in house.
In reality, though, the economics of outsourcing does not look pretty so far ? that is, the more you outsource, the higher your management costs are.
Another disturbing aspect is dependencies it creates. Recent Amazon outage demonstrated how dangerous it could be to rely completely on a cloud solution.
Besides, in many cases those who outsource too much tend to loose key people and core expertise and competencies thus becoming less competitive.
No doubt, for some IT outsourcing works wonders, while for wast majority it is just a waste of time and money.
So will be the faith of cloud computing ? it will be a niche product for specific (usually pretty sophisticated) IT organizations, whereas majority will try it, love it initially, hate it later and end up moving back to the data centers. In fact, this is already happening.

Some say it will be the future of mobile computing, but I really don't see it taking off ? not for a while at least, with out data plans. Also, as mobile processors become more powerful, there is less need to use cloud computing to deal with a problem, unless it is some serious number work.

It will probably not be the future of computing, as people do not trust other people with sensitive data, and home computing's power is also increasing, and any serious processor-demanding work that would take far too long on a normal computer is quite rare ? at least for the regular user, and 'unregular' users probably have access to better hardware.

tl;dr ? No, in my opinion. It isn't overly useful now (in my experience), and as processor power increades, there is less need to process 'on the cloud'

Far to many people refuse to trust their sensitive and confidential information to some unknown server out on the net where they have no control over who may have access to that data.

I think it will grow in popularity over the years but there are many applications where it is just not desirable to use the cloud.

perhaps the future, but not yet, and not for a while longer it wont be commonplace. our current technology would not support the demand for 100million users constantly streaming from servers.

yes, with computers getting smaller and smaller and internet getting more and more widespread, computers will eventually move away from the physical hard drive and data will be stored on the "cloud" which will allow smaller and more efficient computers.

Not necessarily, as long as there's cloud computing, they'll be people who want to keep data on their own hard drive, rather then a remote server somewhere around the globe.

Kucinich's Syria visit raises eyebrows (Politico)

Rep. Dennis Kucinich showed up in Syria this week and held a press conference in which he appeared to praise embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad - who is ruthlessly crushing opposition to his government - as ?highly loved and appreciated by the Syrians.?

Kucinich was originally spotted in Damascus by CNN correspondent Hala Gorani, who tweeted on Monday that she had bumped into the eight-term congressman. ?Ran into Dennis Kucinich in another hotel,? she wrote, also noting that Kucinich had met with Assad for three hours.

State Department spokeswoman Megan Mattson said Kucinich visited Syria at the invitation of its government, and was not there as an official U.S. government representative. Kucinich?s press spokesman did not respond to inquiries on what Kucinich discussed with Assad or who financed Kucinich?s visit.

Syrian state media quoted Kucinich as saying during the press conference, ?President Bashar al-Assad cares so much about what is taking place in Syria, which is evident in his effort towards a new Syria and everybody who meets him can be certain of this.?

Assad is currently under intense international pressure for his regime?s brutal handling of the pro-democracy uprising that has sprung up in the country as a consequence of the broader Arab Spring protests. Opposition figures estimate that some 1,400 people have been killed as a result of government crackdowns on street demonstrations.

Kucinich, who was in Syria along with a small delegation that included his wife, released a statement on Tuesday alleging that Syrian media had mischaracterized the statements he made in Damascus.

?A story written about my remarks by the Syrian Arab News Agency unfortunately mistranslated several of my statements and did not reflect my direct quotes. Arab-speaking friends accompanying me have explained that the problem may have come from a mistranslation as well as the degree of appreciation and affection their state-sponsored media has for President Assad,? Kucinich said in the statement.

However, the Ohio Congressman did not rush to blame Syrian state-run media, saying in the same statement that the mistranslations were ?unfortunate [but]? not a willful intent to mischaracterize my statements or my efforts in the region.?

Some have pushed back on Kucinich?s explanation for the quotations. Foreign Policy writer David Kenner notes that Kucinich does not speak Arabic, and that since the original Syrian news article was in English, no translation would have been necessary.

Kucinich?s comments come the same week as the Republican chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, called for the U.S. Ambassador to Syria to be recalled. The State Department has maintained that having an ambassador in the country continues to be valuable.

This is not the first time that Kucinich has voiced support for the Assad regime. He met with Assad for two hours in 2007 to discuss an Iraq peace plan. And in an interview last month, Kucinich refused to blame the regime for violence in Syria.

Some protestors were trying to ?capitalize on those legitimate demands for reform and use it push a violent agenda,? Kucinich told the Cleveland Plain Dealer, adding that he has ?read where President Assad has made certain commitments, and I would imagine that when things finally settle down, that President Assad will move in a direction of democratic reforms? He has already made that commitment from what I can see.?

Kucinich?s visit to Syria comes after a string of eccentric incidents. As POLITICO reported last month, the Ohio Congressman?s decision to sue a House cafeteria over an olive pit that cracked his tooth has negatively affected his reputation. His April 2011 appearance on the Daily Show as a ventriloquist was seen by critics as bizarre. And during a presidential debate in 2007, Kucinich said that he had seen an unidentified flying object.

Capable Father: Could I do it?

We had our big birthday bash this weekend,? the one for Gelly turning 6 and Bitsy turning 2. The one with all the family, adoptive and birth.? In the past there have been lots of family at these events but this time it was a smaller group.? Mama S (birth mom) Auntie S and a couple of cousins were all that were able to make it from the birth side of the family. ?I love the extended family but it was nice to?have fewer people there this time because we were also saying goodbye.?

We will be moving to Seattle soon, and while we only get together a few times a year with Mama S and will make sure to continue to visit at least once a year, it still feels sad.??Our close proximity to one another gave a sense of security that we will all be losing.

The party was nice, we were able to talk and laugh together, enjoy seeing how much?our kids have grown over the last couple of months.? The boys were anxious the couple of days before the visit but were really happy to see Mama S when she got there.? Mama S always impresses me at our visits, she brings the kids?gifts?but not as bribes, as genuine tokens of?affection.? She takes her time and lets the kids come to her on their own terms, never pushes.? She keeps it positive and happy for them, even though I know her heart is?breaking.??It always makes me wonder how different things might have been for her if someone had been there at the right time to help her.

I know that it doesn't really compare but I had to say goodbye to one of my kids today and it made me think about?Mama S.? Hot?Mama and Mooster, our 9 year old,?were leaving for?Seattle today.??They are going a month before the rest?of the family so that Hot?Mama can start work and get the house situated?while the rest of us tie up all the loose ends here in Utah.? Mooster has been dad's buddy from the moment he was born, we?are together all the time.? So having him leave, even for a month, was hard for both of us.? I am a cryer, I have?tried to control it but then my face just does this ridiculous contorted grimace thing that is even worse than crying, so there were tears.

It made?my heart ache for Mama S.??She does not have her?kids because she does not love them, she loved them enough to know she?could not provide what they needed to thrive.

?How does she bear it?? Saying goodbye to your precious babies.?

It made me think, could I do it???Could I admit?that they would be better off with someone else, or would I have selfishly kept them?? Would I?disappear from their lives after so I?would? not?have to deal with the pain every time I see them?? Would I be mad at the family that gets to hold them and love them everyday?? I don't know.

So here I am learning things?about life from Mama S, someone?that when we started this, I never thought that I could learn something from.? Learning about making sacrifices for the ones you love even when it hurts.? About being brave, not giving up and moving on even when everyone is judging you to be a failure.? About being a good parent.

At the end of the day when I was putting Gelly to bed I asked him what his favorite part of the day was, was it his new toys, the cupcakes, going swimming....what was his favorite.

He said "Seeing my mommy S."?

I said "yeah, that was nice"

He gave me a big hug and held on a little longer than usual and said,??"yeah, I still love her."

I know you love her buddy, the funny thing is so do I.

With the introduction of space probes such as SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory), those in scientific community are beginning to understand the forces that the Sun can have upon the Earth. particular attention has been paid in recent years to the impact of Solar Flares and sunspots on the Earth.

In brief, sunspots are the visible affects of the Sun?s magnetic forces. Sunspots have now been shown to have the greatest affect upon life on Earth when they are either most prevalent at times of Solar Maximum (around 100 sunspots), or most absent (zero sunspots) known as Solar Minimum. In yet another display of collaboration within the Universe, this sunspot cycle lasts for around 11 years ? just short of the Eclipse cycle, enfolded within the longer-term solar activity cycle that lasts for 80-90 years. (Known as the Gleisberg cycle).

Feds charge 38 people in three states for drug trafficking (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) ? A total of 38 defendants in three states face federal narcotics charges as a result of an investigation into a Chicago-based heroin and cocaine trafficking ring, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

The investigation included an alleged supply network, as well as wholesale customers in Cincinnati and New York.

The probe included at least five alleged heroin purchases by an undercover Chicago police officer, wiretaps on 16 phones and seizures of narcotics and drug proceeds.

In one incident last year, the trafficking ring allegedly tried to transport about a pound of heroin hidden inside an SUV to Cincinnati.

After a traffic stop, a drug-sniffing dog detected the presence of narcotics between the seats in the middle row of the vehicle, prosecutors said. Heroin allegedly was found in a secret compartment in the roof.

Most of the defendants were arrested Tuesday and charged in complaints unsealed or filed Tuesday and Wednesday. Four Chicago and three Cincinnati defendants are fugitives. Those arrested include 20 in Chicago, four in Cincinnati and one in Laredo, Texas.

Most face penalties ranging from 10 years in prison to a maximum of life in prison and a $4 million fine.

Domingo Blount, 37, and Gabriel Bridges, 42, who allegedly ran the trafficking ring, and Arturo Flores, 35, who allegedly ran a conspiracy that supplied the ring, were among those arrested.

"The allegations are serious and I look forward to scrutinizing them carefully," said Flores' attorney, Darryl Goldberg.

???? Customer service. Two words that when spoken can mean different things to people. To some, it?s what they do for work and a way they think. To others, it can invoke feelings of anger based on experiences they have had with companies. Being that I work in the customer service field, I am on the first team. Customer service is how I have to think and act. Most people don?t understand that when I mention who I work for, I immediately have to be that persona. I can?t be Jim; I have to be Jim the person who works for company X. I do that not because I want to but because I have to. People immediately associate my company, me, and any bad experience they have ever had. They then began to elaborate how awful an experience they had and how could I work for a company like that. As much as it seems like I'm complaining, it?s the truth. Ask anyone who works in customer service.

???? I wanted to write on this subject today for two reasons. The first is how oblivious folks are to the amount of stress and pressure people are in customer service field. The second point is how oblivious we are as customer service people to how the public has very little understanding of what we do. I?m not saying people don?t understand completely, but people just really don't get it.

???? Sure there is a lot of stress when you talk about any profession. Doctors, lawyers, short order cooks all have levels of stress and pressure that come with the turf. What the general public doesn?t get is the other baggage that comes along with the customer service industry. Like I said earlier, anytime I?m at a function or cookout there will always been one person who feels the need to engage about a bad experience they had recently with my employer. I get the big business and corporations are not the easiest to deal with. Believe it or not, I have to go the same channels to get support from my company that everyone else does. I have experienced the lack of wiliness from reps on the phone to help. Does that mean I go into work and complain to the person beside me? No, I don?t. I accept the fact the when I deal over the phone with someone, the level of concern is going to be limited because we are all brave when we are not face to face. By no means am I saying to tolerate a subpar level of support but I can?t fix human nature, don?t complain to me. Another stressful situation is from the company itself. Corporations in this day look for any way to streamline the operations. Back many years ago when I worked for a different company doing support that was all we did. A customer called in and we did whatever we needed to do to resolve the issue and make the customer happy. If they had any other questions outside of the technical part, we sent them to a better qualified person to help. Today is totally different. Not only do you need to be able to answer almost every question, you need to do it quickly and efficiently. Call center environments have a metric of statistic for everything. Time on a call, hold time, transfer rate, sales, mute time, if you sent out an on-site service tech, if you diagnosed the problem correctly and let?s not forget the time on breaks and time between calls. If there was ever a poster child for George Orwell?s Big Brother, the call center is it. No joke, from the time you get in to the time you leave, a call center phone system knows where you are. If it doesn?t, there better be a darn good explanation. Time is money in the customer service business, don?t think it?s not.

???? The second point with the customer service industry being oblivious to what people know is true. Until recently I always thought people knew what we had to do and how we try to do the best we can but will fall short at times. You will have those people who are snarky and rude but it?s to be expected. When people do not get what they want when they want it, tempers will rise. There a customer I have on a regular basis that is amazed when I shine light on what we go through in the business. People just assume that the job is pretty easy. How hard can it be to sit at a desk all day? Until they know that sitting at the desk isn?t the problem, it?s the 1,000 lb gorilla and pink elephant sitting on each shoulder demanding great service for the customer in shortest amount of time. Trying doing that juggling act everyday and let me know when you hit the burn out point. Most individuals don?t make it past two years.

???? I?m sure the feedback and emails will tell me to not complain and go find another job if it?s that bad. The problem is I like my job. I like helping people. There is a great amount of satisfaction for me to resolve an issue and hear the gratitude in a customer?s voice. I equate it to rescuing a kitten in a tree for a little child. It?s not a difficult task to do but when it?s done everyone feels pretty darn good about themselves. I just want to let people know that next time you have to deal with someone in customer service, don?t assume anything. The person on the other end of that call you make may just be a person like yourself, working hard to do the best they can for you.

Here are some of the credits you may be eligible to claim: Child Tax Credit, first time home buyer tax credit, earned income tax credit, renewable energy tax credit, restoration tax credits, or the new car tax. In some cases, you get paid for tax relief, even if you do not owe any taxes! This is your own personal federal rescue plan. Read on to find out how to claim the tax credit the government says is legally yours to receive. Instructions

Find Tax Credit

Decide which tax credits you may qualify for.

Tax problems can go away with some tax relief. Turbotax software will simply ask you a list of questions to determine your eligibility for these tax credits. There is a free version of Turbotax available based on your income. If you do not qualify for free Turbotax software, fundamentally, is relatively inexpensive. Even if you choose to do your taxes the old paper and pencil way, there are some questions to help you know where to look for tax deductions.

1. Have you bought a new house within this year? Was this your first home purchase? If not, it?s been three years or more since you last owned a home? Remember the first time home buyer credit skatt.2. Do you have children living with you? Do you have more than one child? If your income is relatively low? You may qualify for child tax credit or additional child tax credit. (1040 lines 52 and 66) 3. Is your adjusted gross income (Form 1040 Line 39) relatively low? Then you can qualify for the Hope Credit or the Lifelong Learning Credit (Form 8863 Line 50).

These are just some of the potential tax credits you can claim. If you do not get tax help, carefully examine the other side (backside) of Form 1040 for any credit you can claim.

As promised in April, Apple's latest video-editing software, Final Cut Pro X hit the box-less Mac App Store on Tuesday for $299.99.

The new version was "rebuilt from the ground up," Apple wrote in its release notes, with new ways to edit, store, and manage your media clips.

Perhaps most revolutionary is the new timeline editing interface, called Magnetic Timeline. This feature arranges your clips "magnetically" so you can fluidly drag and drop clips while eliminating unwanted black gaps. As you work, you can also preview your sequence with an interactive animation. For additional fine-tuning you can edit footage in a new Precision Editor function: Another new feature, Clip Connections, lets you link primary story clips to elements like titles and sound effects. A new Auditions feature collects different shots in a single destination in your timeline, which you can swap with existing clips and immediately preview for alternate takes.

Media storage and organization were also revamped. Final Cut Pro X automatically scans, imports, and tags all your media, which you can filter by keyword.

For another $49.99 each, you can enhance your audio editing or color correction tools with companion apps, Motion 5 and Compressor 4.

Apple's new Final Cut Pro X is a 64-bit application written to leverage all the RAM in your system so "you never have to wait for the next edit, even if you're working with 4K video," Apple boasts. Cystic Fibrosis drug offers hope

An international team co-led by scientists at Queen's University, Belfast, has developed a new drug for Cystic Fibrosis sufferers.

The drug specifically targets the so-called Celtic gene which is common in Ireland.

But the researchers believe the breakthrough will have significant implications for all CF sufferers.

The drug should be available to patients next year. Patients take two tablets a day.

Less than a year ago, scientists were awarded £1.7m to research and develop the drug. Specialists from Europe, America and Australia were involved in the project.

They found significant improvement in lung function, quality of life and a reduction in disease flare ups for those receiving the new treatment.

Stuart Elborn from Queen's University, Belfast, co-led the team.

"The development of this drug is significant because it is the first to show that treating the underlying cause of Cystic Fibrosis may have profound effects on the disease, even among people who have been living with it for decades.

"The remarkable reductions in sweat chloride observed in this study support the idea that VX-770 improves protein function thereby addressing the fundamental defect that leads to CF."

Dr Judy Bradley, from the University of Ulster said: "This is a ground breaking treatment because it treats the basic defect caused by the gene mutation in patients.

"Correcting the cells with this mutation shows that treatments aimed at the basic mutation can work leading to improvements in lung function and symptoms."

Dr Damien Downey, from the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust said: "The success of this study illustrates the benefits that come from collaborative work here in Northern Ireland.

"Not only will this breakthrough help patients in Ireland and the UK but it has the potential to change the lives for those with Cystic Fibrosis around the world."

As a result of the recent work researchers from Queen's University, University of Ulster and clinicians from Belfast Health and Social Care Trust have been selected to join the European Cystic Fibrosis Society Clinical Trials Network.

This means Cystic Fibrosis researchers in Northern Ireland will be collaborating with their European counterparts to work toward improved treatments for Cystic Fibrosis on a global level. "

The new drug will be submitted for licensing in the Autumn of this year and is expected to be available to patients by as early as next year.

Lance Bass Brings Boy Bands Back with New Reality Show

Lance Bass is going back to his boy band roots! The former *NSYNC member has just a sold a new reality show to VH1, in which he'll be calling on some other famous boy banders of the past.

 

"It's a really great music show, starring all your favorite boy bands," Bass told New York magazine. "It's going to be really fun."

Bass says the program will feature A.J. McLean from the Backstreet Boys, Bass' pal Joey Fatone from *NSYNC, and Joey McIntyre from New Kids on the Block.

"They're all going to form a boy band, each, from the most talented guys in America that I've scouted, and then they'll go head-to-head in a competition to see who the best band is," Bass explained. "It's bragging rights for the guy in the group, for sure."

While he's already secured some pretty big names to help him out, Bass is hoping to score New Edition's own Bobby Brown to do the show, as well.

"I think Bobby will do it," Bass says with optimism. "I think he'd love it!"
