The announcement today that Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis had been voted to the cover of Madden NFL 12 came somewhat as a shock. He's not considered to be a top-tier player and is hardly among the league's most recognizable players. I personally voted for him in every round but I didn't for a second ever believe that he could actually win the whole thing. EA Sports avoided having to deal with the backlash that would have inevitably come as a part of having Michael Vick on the cover. But with the potential for having to sell the game without an NFL season taking place -- which is sure to cost EA sales of the game -- this could make it a more difficult sell. There is also the possibility that the cover athlete doesn't matter at all and the game will sell no matter who is on the cover. In that case this lands Hillis a nice payday and Cleveland sports fans get something to be excited about for once beyond The Miz becoming WWE Champion.

Sony Online Entertainment Tries to Make up for Inconvenience
DC Universe Online subscribers have been unable to play the game they pay a monthly subscription fee for since PSN went down and it's also impacted gamers' ability to play Free Realms, which recently launched on PS3. Sony Online Entertainment will look to make up for the issues in a few different ways. "We apologize for any inconvenience players may have experienced as a result of the recent service interruption," SOE wrote in a statement. "As a global leader in online gaming, SOE is committed to delivering stable and entertaining games for players of all ages. To thank players for their patience, we will be hosting special events this weekend across our game portfolio, including a Double Station Cash day on Saturday, April 30th. We are also working on a 'make good' plan for players of the PS3 versions of DC Universe Online and Free Realms. Details will be available soon on the individual game websites and forums. "

New Soul Calibur Reveal Coming Next Month?
We might learn the first details about the newest Soul Calibur game in about two weeks' time. Namco Bandai has launched a countdown site which will reach its conclusion on May 11. Earlier this week, director Daishi Odashima tweeted that he hopes he'll "be able to announce something mid May." That fits up nicely with the timeline of the countdown site. Odashima previously indicated a new Soul Calibur was in the works late last year. The pieces seem to fit, so we'll see what happens in May.
